Rob's Halloween Site: The Michael Myers Territory |
Film Connections
Of course, HALLOWEEN has many connections with other films and television shows. Here are just a few...
 THE THING
John Carpenter is of course an avid fan of science fiction and Howard Hawks. Laurie and Tommy can be seen watching the original black and white THE THING on television in the original film.
 FORBIDDEN PLANET
Another classic science fiction film seen in the original. Tommy scares Lindsay in the original HALLOWEEN by calling her name while the haunting soundtrack from FORBIDDEN PLANET plays on.
 NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
"They're coming to get you, Barbara!" is interrupted by a WWAR Special Bulletin on Michael Myers in the Elrod house during HALLOWEEN II.
 PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
This age-old movie played in the background of Mrs. Blankenship's house in HALLOWEEN: The Curse of Michael Myers.
 ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING
The original HALLOWEEN can been seen playing on television while the kids are being babysat. Debra Hill, producer of the original HALLOWEEN, worked on ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING.
 THE FOG
This film is loaded with allusions to HALLOWEEN! Of course, Jamie Lee Curtis and Charles Cyphers are in it. Ty Mitchell (the kid who had a razor blade in his mouth in HALLOWEEN II) also stars. At one point, Andy (Mitchell) makes the statement about having a "stomach pounder and a coke" for breakfast. In HALLOWEEN: The Curse of Michael Myers, one of the Strode boys says, "And now for the famous Tim Strode stomach pounder," a direct reference by screenwriter Daniel Farrands to THE FOG. Also mentioned in THE FOG are the names "Russelville" and "Dick Baxter" (from the original HALLOWEEN). There is also a character named Nick Castle. A real life Nick Castle played Michael Myers in the original HALLOWEEN.
 BODY BAGS
The first segment of John Carpenter's BODY BAGS takes place at a gas station in the town of Haddonfield. The name Haddonfield is mentioned three times during the vignette.
 HALLOWEEN III
Perhaps one of the most ironic scenes ever, the trailer for the original HALLOWEEN can be seen in HALLOWEEN III. Later, Tom Atkins is seen breaking free of being tied in a chair as he watches Laurie walk up to the Wallace house on television.
 SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Jamie Lee Curtis hosted SNL after HALLOWEEN became a success. She had a skit in which she lived in an apartment in Haddonfield and her name was Laurie. It involved killer clothespins(!) A SNL produced during the time of TRADING PLACES featured Jamie Lee Curtis in a horror musical. Donald Pleasence also hosted in the show, the weekend HALLOWEEN II opened at the box office.. In 1997, SNL had a SCREAM special. There were several references to HALLOWEEN, including showing clips from the film, and music from the soundtrack. A group of cheer-leaders perform a "Michael Myers chant."
 BACK TO SCHOOL
The Doyle house can be seen as one of this Rodney Dangerfield film's locations.
 FADE TO BLACK
The film's executive producer is Irwin Yablans and its associate producer is Joseph Wolf (who worked on HALLOWEEN II.) When the lead character Eric Binford (played by Dennis Christopher) is upstairs in his room half-way through the movie, he is having a fantasy of Marilyn Monroe, and in the background (if you listen closely) you can hear a scene from the original HALLOWEEN. It is the scene where Donald Pleasence is on the phone near the railroad tracks. When the lead character's boss is attacked at his workplace, the murderer's hand pierces through an original HALLOWEEN poster!
 THE SHINING
In Halloween 6 there are many references to THE SHINING. The most prominent is the use of the of 237, the most famous number in horror other than 666. 237 is the number of the haunted room in THE SHINING, and also the number of Kara's cell at Smith's Grove. This is visible after Tommy breaks her out. Also, the children in both films are named Danny.
 SCREAM
HALLOWEEN plays a large role in this spoof of slasher films. The killer in the first scene asks a terrified Drew Barrymore HALLOWEEN trivia. Later on, a character by the name of Loomis appears. A reference to "calling the police at the McKinzie's house" is taken from John Carpenter's classic. HALLOWEEN itself plays through the entire ending of the film. Also in the film, Sidney's teacher is named Mrs. Tate. Now, Kevin Williamson wrote SCREAM and did a re-write on H20, in which Laurie Strode has become a teacher and changed her name to Keri Tate.
 TERROR IN THE AISLES
This early 80's theatrical documentary takes a look at the horror film. It is hosted by Donald Pleasence...and features several HALLOWEEN clips and some re-made HALLOWEEN music.
 PSYCHO
The forefather of the modern horror film, Hitchcock's shocker features Janet Leigh (Jamie Lee Curtis's mother), as well as a character named Sam Loomis.
 REAR WINDOW
There is a character by the name of Tom Doyle. Hitchcock is one of Carpenter's favorite director's, hence, his naming the character Brian Andrews played as Tommy Doyle.
 SPIDER-MAN
This connection is in Hydro-Man vs. Sandman, in The Amazing Spider-Man #217. Anyway, on page five, fourth panel, we see Peter Parker (our wall crawling hero) outside a movie theater. On the neon sign that displays the top selling movie, the movie is none other than ... HALLOWEEN II.
 THE STAND
They filmed some of this movie where they filmed HALLOWEEN 4 and 5. The drug store is used, as well as a quick shot of the Corruthers' house.
 BRIDE OF CHUCKY
The opening is set in an evidence depository which includes Jason's hockey mask, Leatherface's chainsaw, and Michael's mask.
 WHITE ZOMBIE
White Zombie did a song called, "I'm Your Boogieman," in which they use samples from HALLOWEEN, when the kids tell Tommy, "He's gonna get you!"
 THE TOM GREEN SHOW
After swimming Lake Washington, the HALLOWEEN theme is played during Tom Green's press conference on the lake's shore.
 FOREVER YOUNG
In H20, Marion's (Nancy Stephens) address is Cyprus Pond. This is also an address used in Forever Young, which is also directed by H20 director Steve Miner.
 SCREAM 3
The mansion used in the end of the film is the same location used in H20 as the campus.
 SCARY MOVIE
In this spoof of horror movies, a female character is sitting in a classroom as the teacher lectures, then looks outside to find the killer staring at her. When she looks back later, the killer's gone. This is in reference to the scene in the original film.
 MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN
There is a reference by one character of a town called Santa Mira (like in H3) about 15 minutes into the film. John Carpenter worked on both films.
 KEVIN WILLIAMSON CONNECTION
The name "Tate" was used by Kevin Williamson as Laurie Strode's alias in H20. In addition, the teacher in SCREAM was named Mrs. Tate and a teacher in THE FACULTY was named Mr. Tate (the film also had H20's Josh Hartnett).
 THE BOOGENS
During some dialogue, the characters mention that they'll be "going into town to see HALLOWEEN."
 THE SANDLOT
Vincent's Drug Store is mentioned, while the exterior is shown as well. It is the same Vincent's Drug Store where H4 and H5 were filmed.
