After Watching

Read the following commentary about the restoration of the film and explain what is meant by the underlined phrases

Nearly fifty percent of all the films that have been made since the birth of Hollywood have been damaged by the ravages of time. Vertigo almost became such a casualty. Over the past three decades, the original film negative had been rotting away in studio vaults. Originally photographed in VistaVision, a non-anamorphic, deep-focus filming process developed by Paramount Pictures, Vertigo was exposed on film horizontally, not vertically. Since VistaVision is no longer used in the film industry, except for certain types of special effects sequences, Harris and Katz had to essentially rebuild a brand-new restoration negative of the film. They succeeded. In November of 1997, Vertigo dazzled new audiences and resurrected the passion of its devoted and long-time fans when the restored version made its stunning widescreen debut on screens across the United States.
