---Look at this picture right here. Do you notice anything wrong with it? I'll tell you what's wrong with it since you obviously can't tell. She is "wearing" toilet paper. What girl in her right mind "wears" toilet paper? I know of a lot of people (girls in particular) that are pissed off by this picture. I mean, why would you ever wear toilet paper when all the bishounen you come into contact with instantly fall in love with you. It's not because of her school uniform, lemme tell you that. I should know, I tried wearing it and going to the Shi Jin Ten Chi Shou and it didn't work. No bishounen instantly fell head over heels for me, sadly to say though I did try. But the point is, Miaka has to have some screws loose to even consider wearing toilet paper as a garment.

And the 3rd time was when she lost Tamahome (to Yui in Kutou) and it was raining and she just walked into a river and didn't notice. DUH! And Hotohori had to save her. I wish he didn't. FY would be so much more interesting without Miaka. All she can do is scream: "Tamahome! Tasukete!" And she can't fight! All she ever did with Hotohori's sword was swing it! ---I HATE MIAKA. I hate Miaka sooo much she makes Usagi look good!!! She is and always will be number one on my list of the anime cahracters I hate. She's a slob, bitch, whore, slut, hoochie koochie, and a bimbo. Not only that, she makes a REALLY bad friend. The only reason why she came to save Yui-chan was because of her dumbass Tamahome. I can't believe her. She can throw her fucking self out of Fushigi Yuugi becuase no one needs her. She's so god damn weak I don't know how anyone could stand her. ---I think I have may the *real* answer to why Miaka is a decidedly vexing character: She's a typical shoujo fantasy vessel designed to play out the average fifteen-year-old Japanese schoolgirl's fantasies. I can almost guarantee anyone that she is more popular in Japan than in the U.S. Why? Because she was meant to appeal to girls who aren't really special but somehow turn up in extreme and spectacular circumstances. She's not extremely pretty, smart, or talented. She's just *Miaka* and everyone loves her for being *Miaka*. Miaka lives in a ridiculously pleasant world were nothing truly bad can happen to her because she's the heroine/protagonist. She's supposed to be sympathetic. Instead, she's nauseating to many viewers because she's given royal treatment. Shoujo like FY is intended for an audience that can relate to Miaka. If someone cannot relate to her and does not understand why Miaka is desirable to the many bishounen (or deserving of their attention) then that person will find Miaka grating, at best. Her flaws and strengths are cliched. She's ripped straight out of any other shoujo series with a teenage female lead. Can we say TYPICAL? Good lord... And she's predictable because heroines like herself always go through the same trials before ending up in the arms of the men (or men) they love. Nothing about Miaka is new or interesting. She's inane and tedious. Boring. Stereotyped. If she had some real flaws like jealousy, grudges, and prejudices, I think I'd like her. Yet all her problems consist of things other girls would kill to have done unto them. Too many cute guys fall in love with her, others girls are jealous of her, she's stuck in a universe where the men breathe just to smell her gas... And worst of all, there is no break from her. She's everywhere, all the time, taking up room on the screen so that everyone has to put up with more of her antics and activities.
She makes me sick. Personally, I prefer Yui. A LOT. At least she has some real literary value to offer. That is, until the second series, when she became Miaka with blonde hair... (Submitted by the Suboshi no Miko)

---You're all so wrong about why Miaka sucks. I'll tell you why she honest-to-god BITES: Because she's SUCH a shallow depiction of a young girl. Why are characters like Yui able to have more impact? Because they aren't half as idealized as Miaka. She makes me ill. She's so annoying.
But what really steams me about Miaka is that we're supposed to like and relate to her. As if! Let's get real! She's not a real person. Watase Yuu's heroine of Ayashi No Ceres is so much better! So is Yui! I can't believe that Miaka, the laughing stock of the ages, could be considered a good role model by any standards. She's too nauseating for me to like her. I wish she'd choke on some of that food that she's always shoveling into her mouth. Some of her fans have suggested that Miaka's a good, likable person. That's insulting to my intelligence. I don't like people who don't have any real problems or obstacles to overcome.
And don't get me started on her stupid love story! Tamahome immediately fell in love with her??? WHY??? She's a fool! She's clumsy, stupid, inane, insipid, ridiculous, immature... The list just goes on forever! Any man who is attracted to Miaka must suffer from serious delusions. I love the FY boys, but their taste in women is soooooo bad. And the way her love story with Tamahome/Taka ended was so cliched and goofy. Love conquers all? Where's the pain? The realism? The depth? Suzuno had to wait many years to be reunited with her lover but everything was so easy for Miaka. And poor Yui..! Just think about HER situation with Nakago, Suboshi, Tamahome, and everthing else. And Genbu No Miko didn't even get to fall in love because she died! Soi was never told by Nakago that he loved her! Miaka is NO ONE and NOTHING compared to these girls! Her presence and her dumb romance(s) are the only complaints I have about what is otherwise a sublime manga/anime series. (Submitted by "Kristi")

---For one thing, she annoys me. At the beginning of the series I thought she was really cool because she whooped slave trader ass and only needed help because she was outnumbered. But later on she just pisses me off. Why couldn't Miaka have been more like Nuku Nuku. A little dumb but really independent and strong. The poor man must be tramatized. He'll be haunted with nightmares about that for the rest of his life. Miaka would have to get Tamahome drunk before he's sleep with her. Actually, she'll probably have to knock him out with a bat and drag him away. Why did all the cute guys fall in love with her?!! WHEN IS SHE GOING TO BE IN THE REAL WORLD??!!
