MIKE MYERS
(Austin Powers, Dr Evil, Fat Bastard)

|
Opportunity knocked when Toronto's Second City Comedy Troupe hired Mike Myers as one of their cast members. After eight years of working for Second City in Toronto, Mike moved to its Chicago branch. From 1983-1986, he was involved in various comedic projects such as Mullarkey & Myers. He also hosted a Canadian music video show. In 1988, Mike got hired by Saturday Night Live (SNL). SNL was the highlight of his career as Mike developed many memorable characters for the comedy show including fan favorites such as Wayne Campbell of "Wayne's World" and Linda Richman, hostess of "Sprockets and Coffee Talk." In 1992, Mike and Dana Carvey brought their SNL sketch "Wayne's World" to the big screen entitled, what else, "Wayne's World" (1992). The movie was a smash, grossing over $120 million domestically at the box office. With the success of "Wayne's World" (1992), Mike left SNL to concentrate on a movie career. His next two movies, "So I Married an Axe Murderer" (1993) and "Wayne's World 2" (1993) were box-office disappointments with the former grossing around $12 million and the latter around $48 million. After those two movies, Mike wanted time off to think about his career, so he married his sweetheart Robin Ruzan. During his time off, he formed the rock group Ming Tea with Mattew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. It was reported that during his stint with Ming Tea that Mike developed the Austin Powers character. Mike's next movie, "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" (1997), was a modest hit, grossing around $54 million domestically, but developed a huge following on video. His next movie, "54" (1998), had him play a serious role as Steve Rubell, owner of the ultra hip club Studio 54. The movie bombed, grossing around $16 million domestically, but critics applaud his performance. Undeterred, Mike Myers went back to his comedic roots with "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" (1999). Related Aticles: Mojo
