Was Bruce Lee intending to play the role of
Guan Yu (Kaun Yu)??
1/ A fiery youth, Kuan Yu, then known as Shou Chang (Long as eternity), was a merchant. One day, the son of a local official kidnapped the already-betrothed daughter of some villagers to be his concubine. The parents protested and the official met her parents petitions for her return with indifference. So, Kuan Yu set out and killed the official's son and returned the girl to her parents. The official, hearing the news, set his soldiers to destroy Kuan Yu. Kuan Yu took refuge in a nearby temple, but the soldiers burned the temple in an effort to force him out. Kuan Yu remained in the temple until the flames surrounded him, and then burst forth from the flaming building and killed all of the surprised soldiers, who most certainly thought he would be dead by that time.
Kuan Yu now had to flee the country. This proved to be no easy task as the only way out of the country was through the heavily guarded Tung Kuan mountain pass. Fleeing the growing wrath of the official, he paused by a stream to wash, and looking at his reflection in the water, learned that the fire had permanently turned his flesh a deep red. Since that time, General Kuan has almost always been depicted as having a red face. While resting by the side of a mountain stream pondering his next move, Shou Chang noticed that his appearance had changed, so he changed his name to Yun Chang (Long as a cloud). He then approached the soldiers guarding the pass and crossed over without difficulty.
2/ Kuan Ti or Kuan Yu is better known as the most patron saint of the Chinese martial arts. In most of the Kung Fu kwoons in China, one will find a small space devoted to this awesome looking general holding his quan-do. A special r espect is accorded to this figure as it benevolently presides over the kwoon. Students and instructors alike pay respect before and after workouts and training, all hoping that Kuan Ti will shower them with blessings. One of the most popular folk heroes during the Ching dynasty, 1644 to 1912, Kuan Yu served primarily as the god of war. However, his realm was decidedly different from our ideas of the gods of war, adapted from the Greeks and Romans, in that Kuan Yu was known as one who could avert war and protect the people from its horrible consequences.
Nin Gung-Yao
It has been said that Bruce was to play this charcter in his Shaws film. Nin Gung-Yao was a famous captain in ancient China. He was a good martial artist but was very naughty. This story was later made in 1980 entitled 'Rebellious Reign.' I will write more about this story once i've viewed the movie!!
Bruce Lee's Letter to Run Run Shaw
Dear Run Run,
As of now, consider September, Oct. & November (1973), a period of three months, reserved for Shaw.
Specific terms [we] will discuss upon my arrival.
Bruce Lee
Background
Bruce wanted Mr Chu Yuan to direct this picture who is shown in the picture with Bruce below. Apparently script writers were Yi Kang and Chang Chieh who worked for Shaws. Run Run wanted Cheng Kang to direct so rumours persist that Bruce declined to do the film before his untimely demise on July 20th, 1973. But Chang Chieh said that they were still negotiating details for the film at the time of Lee's death.
