Mysterious GAME
After the recently released original 'Game of Death' pagoda footage which was shown in the documentaries, 'A Warrior's Journey' and 'G.O.D.' (by Japanese Artport) - We are still asking - Does any more footage of Bruce Lee exist from 'The Game of Death'? The answer is a definite 'YES' but how much more is another matter! Let's now look at the footage that definitely exists but has yet to be officially released to the public.
Outside scenes of Bruce Lee exist from various credible sources i have spoken to as follows :-
1/ Bruce vs Karate fighters
2/ Bruce vs Dan Inosanto
3/ Big Log pagoda scene (Chieh Yuan v Dan Inosanto) shown below
The makers of Kung Fu Monthly magazine conducted research in the mid 70s and some of their findings are as follows :-
"Under Lee's own direction it was the most open of films, shot with the VOLUNTARY assistance of a score of Lee's friends and acquaintances." They went on further to say, "When we travelled to Hong Kong, we were informed by a Golden Harvest representative that footage lasting longer than a whole film had been shot and that all that was needed to finish it for release was a series of linking sequences." This is very important for the case of a lot more footage being filmed by Bruce Lee. What follows is the accounts of various eye witnesses i have talked to over the last couple of years and the places where these extra scenes have been seen :-
1/ An cinema showing in Toronto, Canada (circa 1975) which i have spoken to various eye witnesses. This was advertised as 'Unreleased footage from Bruce Lee's last film'. A lot of extra footage was shown including extra pagoda floors. Bruce vs a Samurai was one floor which was revealed and the guardian was played by Yusuaki Kurata. Also, it is interesting to note that when UK Kung Fu Monthly conducted research in Hong Kong in 1974, they implied that Bruce had indeed filmed the first floor of the pagoda that was guarded by 20 or so karate men. Another floor reported to be filmed was guarded by Kung Fu men. These have been confirmed to me by various eye witnesses. Chieh Yuan talked about the 20 or so karate men guarding the first floor in an interview before his tragic death in 1976.
2/ Wometco Home Theatre in America (circa 1980) showed a documentary about Bruce's original 'Game of Death'. This showed a lot of original footage.
3/ A person from Malaysia claims that 22 VHS videos of 'Tower of Death' aka 'Game of Death 2' were released in the mid 80s by Rainbow videos before the video was shelved because of copyright re Golden Harvest. This same person owns a copy of this extremely rare version which was made by 'Seasonal Films'. The story is that a millionaire challenges Bruce but he only accepts after his sister is kidnapped. Bruce has to go to an unknown island off the coast of Korea where he faces various challenges outside and has to fight his way to the top of the pagoda. A hulk man guards a strange looking pagoda which is rumoured to be played by Bolo Yeung aka Yang Sze. This extremely rare version stars Bruce Lee, Yang Sze, Maria Yi, Roy Chiao, Roy Horan, Dan Inosanto, Ji Han Jae etc.. A teaching scene is featured which was reported in Game of Death Extract mag by JKD Hong Kong Club in 1978. This states that 95% of the footage is authentic Bruce Lee and 5% is a stand in (Kim Tai Jung) which is similar to what Kung Fu Monthly were told was filmed by Bruce Lee when conducting research in the mid 70s. The story is similar to Bruce Lee's original from my research.
4/ Another eyewitness claims that a company has just found many rare scenes of Bruce from 'Game of Death' hidden away in the Phillipines Film Archives. Let's hope this is true!!
5/ It was reported last year on the internet that another version of 'Game of Death' had been just discovered in Hong Kong. This stars Bruce Lee and Nora Miao (who is rumoured to play the role of the kidnappead girl).
6/ On Kim Tai Jung's official site, he states that he saw 90 mins of Bruce Lee continuous Game of Death film footage back in 1975 with Lam Ying Ching (this did not include any pagoda scenes but Lam stated these were all filmed by Bruce Lee). Lam Ying Ching can be seen playing a karate fighter in outside picture stills against Bruce Lee.
7/ Linda Lee wrote an article in 1975 saying that at the time of Bruce's death the film was nearly completed and was now going to be finished by George Lazenby.
Other scenes rumoured to be from 'Game of Death' are as follows :-
1/ Car park scenes of Bruce fighting a gang as shown below.
2/ These next picture (and the ones of the left of the screen) are rumoured te be from the production of the film (note Bruce directing).
Did Bruce Lee fight Bolo outside the pagoda in the original film??
Does 'Seasonal Films' own original Bruce Lee footage which is locked away in their vaults? Also, James Tien must be contacted and interviewed to verify the scenes he filmed for the 'Game of Death'?
I hope this helps a little about the 'Mystery' of Bruce Lee's original film. All of these points are just from information I have been informed about on the Internet and none is to be taken as the TRUTH! My research is on-going and i hope to make some massive break throughs very soon. Keep an open mind my fellow Bruce Lee fans and keep on searching for the TRUTH!!
