The Sherwood Sentinel
Volume 2
July 23 1998
Letter from the Editor
Thank you to everyone for being so complimentary on the first issue. I know if we all unite there will be many more to come. This issue is late because my old computer went on the fritz and I couldn't do anything for about a month. Great huh! Well, I'm back now with a bigger, better issue for you, chocked full of the stuff you love- all about our dear Scott Sherwood.
~Susan
We now return you to The Sherwood Sentinel, the greatest newsletter east of the Monogahela and west of the Allegheny, already in progress...................
The Great Debate
That is, the debate for Betty's heart- Victor Comstock or Scott Sherwood?
by Susan L. Minnick
Considering this is The Sherwood Sentinel, I can probably guess what you all are thinking at this moment; but let's take an objective view at this matter (at least for a minute or two) before we begin our chants: SCOTTY FOREVER VICTOR NEVER! ;)
Betty and.... Victor
Okay, scenario number one. Although many of you have just cringed- read on! (I think you'll love the ending :) The majority of WENN fans have known Victor Comstock since episode one, or have we? Victor, the suave businesslike Station Manager was just that: businesslike. He never really opened up to anyone at the station beyond polite conversation to tell them anything about his past. In fact- the only personal statistics we know about Victor are that he has no living relatives and that he once dated Grace Cavendish.
The romantic side of Victor is one rarely seen, and usually manifests itself in his dreams and ideals for WENN. It should be noted that when he did take Betty on a romantic stroll along the river they didn't talk about moonlight or love; they discussed the flow of the Allegheny versus the Monogahela.
When Victor returned from Germany in Happy Homecomings Betty greeted him with tears of joy. She smiled inside and out when he told her he was back for good (we assume), and she insisted on riding with him to the train station in Thanks a Lottery only to be admonished by Victor's orders that the station needed her more than he did. Betty nervously waited for him to return from Washington, and was just a tad jealous when he was matched up with Maple for dinner.
Betty does care for Victor; he is an honest gentleman. He has many goals and dreams for WENN, much like herself. If they do get married
Betty and Scott (whew- even I couldn't go any further with that idea)
Now we come to a definitely interesting pair. Scotty is anything but private about his personal achievements; since his first episode we've heard many tales of an adventure from foreign lands. Sumatra, Singapore, Spain, England~ you name it and Scott's been there. When he came to WENN he schemed and scammed with new ideas even Victor approved of in retrospect, giving the station a reputation with Pittsburgh's listening public that no fan could soon forget.
The romantic side of Scott Sherwood was apparent in all forms, WENN and Betty Roberts. He openly admitted that she was part of the reason he came; when he was booted out by the Satanic Santa and disgraced by her, Scotty took his chances and kissed her passionately. When a gun was pointed at his head he didn't negotiate, he didn't run, he just told Betty what had been evident for a long time- he loved her.
When Scott arrived he took Betty by surprise; after all, Victor had left her in charge. However they soon grew close and Betty often relied on him to pull WENN out of many a jam, and, at times, as a personal confidant and friend. She voluntarily aimed the gun at herself during the "Buy Barley Futures" craze, and seemed slightly peeved at the idea of Scott and Maple being "two ships that go bump in the night."
Betty cares for Scott, this is obvious. She shares his admiration for WENN and its crew, as well as his adventurous spirit. She accepted him back after his romantic demise without telling anyone his secret, and Betty gave him her trust when she told him Victor's. In fact, as of late the only real thing in their way is the idea that they mustn't keep Victor waiting.
So, fellow WENNers, will Victor be waiting? Now that we've taken an unbiased view, let's admit what we all think. Victor and Betty? Sure, as business partners. They both love WENN, and Victor's one and only dying devotion as far as Betty's concerned is the station.
Scott, on the other hand, would leave WENN in a snap for her. Betty is the one he loves, he admitted it thinking those would be his dying words; words which some consider the most important ever spoken.
Now that we've thoroughly debated- it's time for Betty to decide. In her mind
she may have loyalty to Victor, but knowing Scotty- Vic Vic doesn't have a chance.
Cryptogram
Okay, here's the answer to the cryptogram found in the first issue of the
Sentinel:
"Scotty somethings Betty, but does Betty something Scotty"?
That code is referred to as a "Picket Fence Code" and is a classic in
cryptography.
In The Next Issue:
Here are some great suggestions from one of our fellow Scotty fans, Jenny. For the next issue, how about we all write a small paragraph on what makes Scott Sherwood so great, or why we like Scott Sherwood? I'm all for it, and submissions are welcome. Just
send them to me at: ScottyGal2@aol.com
Thanks Jenny, great idea!
