The Beach, The World Tour
Source: Alex N. Mace, L.W.D. Zine
Over the past couple of weeks, Leonardo has travelled through the major cities
of Europe going as it would seem "door to door" to spread the word that THE
BEACH has arrived, giving warmth to any number of frost-hardened sidewalks of
the Old World.
Jolly 'Ole England
Starting in London, Leonardo met with the movie's makers and cast to kick off
the first of three European premieres. And Oh, did they do it in style. After
waving their respects to nearly 15,000 screaming fans, Leonardo and company
ventured into the movie house for a viewing of the film, followed by a
massive party in an old, abandoned Library. Each level of the five-story
shebang offered different themes in keeping with the movies' various
settings. In all, 3,000 people lent their brimming party vibes to the
ambience of the evening, giving a truly spectacular send off to Leonardo,
Danny Boyle and the rest of the cast and crew, who were due in Germany for
the Berlin Film Festival the following day.
Deustchland
Managing to get past a fleet of paparazzi, THE BEACH car-cade made it from
the airport to Berlin's venerable Schloss Hotel, where Leonardo was able to
get a good nights sleep before the following days opening festivities. As for
the Berlin premiere, it's After-Party was replete with fully-functional
water-falls, dancing jungle nymphs, live drum circles and to cap it off, a
complete, turn-of-the-century train station. However, the official BEACH
train (which happened to be in the form of a private jet) was due to fly to
Paris sometime the next day, but with the "tour" now gaining momentum, this
particular group of passengers could almost get there solely on their
combined energy.

Once in Paris, THE BEACH - or as it is known domestically , "La Plage" -
took on a slightly different look, with it's French co-stars Guillame Canet
and Virginie Ledoyen getting the lion's share of the exposure. Together with
Leonardo the trio checked in with numerous radio and talk shows and held
forth in a few press conferences. Although the French don't publicize their
premieres, when the time came, there were still throngs of fans perched
contentedly waiting for a glimpse of their favorite celebrities.
Enjoying Paris as much as he does, Leonardo decided to stay on for a few more
days after the premiere and take in the almost overwhelming number of
historic sites and museums; from the resplendent, gothic spires of Notre Dame
to the ravishing art pieces of the Musee D'Orsay, Leonardo was ecstatic, yet
hungry for more. With Mom and Grandma there, he was eager to show them
everything he could. It's always good to mix business with pleasure, and if
you can manage that in Paris, well then, as the French say, "plus de noix de
caco" (extra coconuts to you).

Gangs of New York

Miramax Films' 90 million dollar epic, "Gangs of New York" is getting
an international flavor. Joining
stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Willem Dafoe in the Martin
Scorsese helmed project will be Katie Holmes in the
pivotal role of Jenny and veteran
British character actor Stuart Wilson as Boss Tweed.
"I'm one of Ms. Holmes' biggest fans," Scorsese told
PNS. "Her talent runs deep and the camera loves her. I
can't imagine living without my
weekly 'Dawson's Creek' fix. I'm totally hooked and
watch the show religiously," he added. Scorsese also
recalled that her screen test
with DiCaprio was "phenomenal."
In the role of DiCaprio's father, Irish thespian
Daniel Day Lewis has signed on for what is essentially
a cameo. "He's in only one scene,"
Scorsese told us. "A flashback, but a key one
nonetheless that gives us insight into Leo's
character."

Thai workers put the finishing touches on a billboard advertising the movie
"The Beach," starring Leonardo DiCaprio on a Bangkok street Monday, March 6,
2000. The movie, which opens Tuesday, was filmed in Thailand. Even though the
movied did not do well in the U.S., 20th Century Fox is not worried since the

Theaters Abroad Lift Film Industry

Leonardo DiCaprio's latest movie, "The Beach,'' sank like the Titanic with
U.S. moviegoers. Its distributor, 20th Century Fox, isn't worried, though.
"The Beach" is staying afloat in overseas markets, where it is expected to
gross at least twice its U.S. take, showing just how big a force
international theater circuits have become for Hollywood.
