Gag
Gag doujinshi can be a lot of fun- especially if the art is good and they're done well. Even if you can't understand the Japanese, it's frequently pretty easy to get the jist of the parody. They're not half as hard to find as romantic doujinshi, but like all doujinshi the quality in this genre varies a lot. Also, sometimes some parodied themes are repeated between the doujinshi.
Kai Ogata(?) circle has some amazing artwork that is very close to the original manga. The stories are mostly gags. These are definately my favorite of my gag doujinshi.
Spark! has a LOT of a couple page short funny stories and some really nifty artwork. Shorts include one about Kaoru's cooking, Saitou's wild hair, one with Shishio, one with Aoshi and Misao, and one with Kenshin and Sano and Hiko in a modern setting. It has 30 pages.
Break! Is another gag doujin by the same mysterious doujinshi circle. Stories include one where Saitou pops out of a river surprising Kenshin who was sitting nearby, a one-pager extrapulating on the whole slice a daikon in half and put it back together (with a person,) a rather odd Jinei piece, one with Chou saying something that surprises people, Aoshi running into a tree, and a few others. 30 pages.
Break! 2 is, obviously, the sequel to Break! Like the other two, it has a lot of well-drawn short gags. One has Hiko and Kenshin, one is Kaoru making fun of what Kenshin looks like with wet hair, One with Yumi and Soujiro hanging around Shishio because it's cold outside (?), a couple with Saitou, one with Saitou and Hiko, and a lot more. It has 26 pages.
? Circle; The backs all have Rurouni Kenshin Book (#) on them. These mainly focus on the Juppongatana, especially Soujiro. The artstyle is chibi almost all the time and decently shoujo. In one of the books, the same artist does one of the stories as the one who does the covers to the Kyoto books- so it may or may not actually be the same circle. The stories in these doujinshi are mostly all gags.
Rurouni Kenshin Book 11- Non-Full Strength Party(as in political party) Propoganda, by Miwa Sinohara is a pretty good example from what I've seen of doujinshi by this circle. The style is very cute and focuses on Soujiro. It has several shorts; one with Aoshi trying to deal with Soujiro and failing miserably (see scan,) a parody of Soujiro's message in the sweets box, Soujiro cooking, and a few more that are hard for me to at a glance figure out exactly what is supposed to be happening. It has 38 pages.
Miracle Game, also by Miwa Sinohara, is also focused on Soujiro. The begining has short strips about Soujro and Okita, then is a longer story about Soujiro when he is younger and with Shishio, intersperced with scenes of him with Kenshin and Saitou (I'm guessing from the episode with Senkaku.) Aoshi also makes a brief cameo appearance. It has 26 pages.
Super Balance has several shorts with all sorts of characters in it. In the front is a cute picture of the Kenshingumi, including Tsubame. After that is a really short piece with Kenshin vs Enishi. Then a couple one pagers with things like Soujiro and Kamatari, Kenshin and Tomoe, a 2-pager when Saitou is giving Aoshi the map of Shishio's HQ (though apparently Saitou gives him the wrong thing...) After that is a short from the same artist who does most of the Kyoto doujinshi with the Battousai, Okita and some other random Shinsengumi members. Then there are a couple sketches, a story with Sano and Yahiko, another story with Kenshin and Tomoe, one with Misao, Aoshi and Soujiro, and finally another one with Battousai and Okita. It has 38 pages.
This doujinshi is no longer in my possession.
Pretty Boys! by Akusumuri Circle and Aimu Minase is a short gag doujinshi centered around Soujiro and Kamatari. The style is VERY shoujo and has a couple of pics of Soujiro and Kamatari dressed in eachother's clothes. I think it is mostly about each of them vying for Shishio's attention. The last couple of pages is a seperate story that is an introspective piece on Soujiro (Still very shoujo style)- I think after he begins wandering. It is only 16 pages long.
I don't know the name of this circle, but they are another gag circle. Their art style isn't that great (kind of bizarre), and tends to vary from character to character (the scans I have are of some of the better pictures in them.)
Sunny Day! Juppongatana, is another gag doujinshi that centers around the Juppongatana. Kamatari and Soujiro are drawn pretty shoujo; other characters like Usui and Houji are drawn pretty simplistically and angular. It includes things like Soujiro finding Gein in Shishio's hot spring, Usui in a swan lake costume, random arguing between the characters, and a couple cute page drawings. It has 26 pages.
Kyoto Blossoming has a couple "redone" scenes from the manga, like when Kaoru first meets Kenshin and Kenshin talking to Soujiro during their second fight (Yumi begins to yell at Soujiro quite vehemently.) It also has Misao finding a quite different scene when she... erm.. rushes in on Aoshi and Okina (I'll leave that up to your imagination.) Another one is when Misao tries to stop Kamatari from killing herself she accidently hits her head ONTO the needle. There's one where Yahiko is talking to Kaoru, one where Megumi is talking to Aoshi, and one really odd one where Aoshi is apparently getting beat up by an anthropomorphic daisy. It has 26 pages.
Juppongatana Hooray! by Over Drive circle is (yet another) Juppongatana gag doujinshi. (Yes, I put them all together- the rest of my collection isn't just Juppongatana gag doujinshi- I promise.) The artwork isn't great, but it has a couple cute pictures of the Juppongatana in modern clothing, Soujiro being mischievious, Anji in an apron, and apparently the main story is about Shishio (changed?) into a baby and the rest of the Juppongatana dealing with it. It has 38 pages.
Oh, Let's Go to Kyoto, Imp Comics Deluxe circle (I think), is a gag doujinshi. Most of the stories in here are really short. The first one seems to be about Houji trying to buy the Kenshin manga series at a bookstore staffed by other Kenshin characters. Some of the others include a somewhat alternate ending to the soujirou fight, and a one panel comic making fun of anime bangs. It has 46 pages.
Kangaroo-Paw Circle has allright artwork, though it tends to vary from story to story. I only have 2 of the doujinshi that they did, but both are full of shorter stories, mainly gags.
San Ka Ketsu Jitsu has parodies like an alternate Sano vs Saitou battle, some randomness with Jineh, some talking between Hiko and Kenshin, and some others. It has 38 pages.
Wish on a Star, Pray on the Moon is focused entirely on Hiko. It is less of a gag that the previous Kangaroo-Paw doujinshi that I have, but it still has some gags in it. The first story is Hiko remembering what he was like as a kid, a couple short gags including Hiko finding out Kenshin has freckles, and then a story that takes place back during the war and Hiko interacting with a some peasants. It has 22 pages.
Meijikinenkan (the names on the back are: Sango, NamIuchigiwa, Kingyo, and Kitakaze.) This is another mainly gag doujinshi, but the last story, which is a focus on Sano and Katsu is pretty serious from what I can tell. Some of the short gags include Kaoru looking cold and hurt after the Juppongatana fights and Hiko not thinking before he loans her his cloak (she of course falls to the ground under its weight,) a redo of Usui attacking Misao, and some of the shots that I've scanned. It has 50 pages.
I'm not sure which cicle did these, but they apparently do a "Kyoto" series, which are entirely gags that take place during the Kyoto Arc.
Kyoto 2 is, like the genereal circle information says, is a book ful of gags that take place mostly during the Kyoto Arc. The art style varies from story to story. This one has a lot of Hiko and Kenshin, a little of the Juppongatana and Saitou messing with eachother, and the last story seems to be about the Shinsengumi during the war (?)- with it being one of their birthdays. It has 42 pages.
Kyoto 5, also by the same circle, has roughly similar stories to Kyoto 2. Some of the stories in this volume have some really mild shounen-ai scenes. Uhm.. Most of the artwork in this doujinshi is like the artwork on the cover, but there are some other artists that went into it. It has 50 pages.
Strongest Men, Sun Garden circle is another gag doujinshi with a couple of stories in it. The first one is about Sano and Saitou- they start out arguing on the street and then go out drinking sake. I think then Saitou tells Sano something about when he was in the Shinsengumi while they're drinking. The second has the characters in a modern setting dealing with a guy with a gun (Takemi I think his name was- the same guy with the gattling gun from the Oniwabanshu eps.) Then is a short with Kenshin and Hiko. The last stroy, with Kenshin and Sano, has Sano dealing with some thugs while Kenshin is fast asleep on the porch- I think this one may have some light shounen-ai content. It has 40 pages.
Today Will be a Sunny Day; Circle unknown. This doujinshi has a (thinner) artsyle than most of the others and is kind of distinctinve. It reminds me of something, but I can't put my finger on it. It has a couple short gags that mainly focus on Kenshin and Kaoru. It also has a few with Sano or Saitou. Near the end there's a 6-page text section with small rough sketches on them. It is 42 pages long.
More Gag Doujinshi!
