Potentially Cool Costume Flicks:
Now Playing:
Horatio Hornblower -- Beat to quarters, Hornblower fans! Two new adventures of the popular naval series are now showing on A&E television, once again featuring John Mollo's authentic costumes.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon -- Director Ang Lee's stunning new effort combines Chinese history with spectacular martial arts. It stars Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh, with costume and Oscar-winning production design by Tim Yip.
Coming Attractions:
(In theatres)
The Claim (April 2001) -- The very unique web site for this Michael Winterbottom film (loosely based in Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge and set in 1849 California Gold Rush country) offers the chance to track the film as it is being made, from reading the complete script, to watching rushes, or getting daily updates from cast and crew. Includes an interview with costume designer Joanne Hansen.
The Golden Bowl (April 2001) -- More Henry James from director James Ivory, with costumes by Merchant-Ivory regular John Bright.
Moulin Rouge (May 2001) -- Baz Luhrmann's unique take on turn-of-the (19th)-century Paris is an anachronistic musical. Costumes promise to be spectacular (there's a photo in the May issue of Premiere). The official web site is convoluted but fun; you can join "Club Roulin Rouge" for extras.
The Lord of the Rings (December 2001) -- The trailer for the first segment of Peter Jackson's epic film trilogy is on the web, in theaters, and getting rave reviews. Costumer Ngila Dickson, known for her creations for the Xenaverse, garbs the denizens of Middle-earth.
New on Video/DVD
Farscape --
The first season of this SciFi Channel addictive cinematic space series, featuring some killer costumes by Terry Ryan (Gallipoli), has started its U.S. video and DVD release, with commentaries and behind-the-scenes features.
Dune -- The SciFi Channel's 6-hour miniseries adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel will garnered the network's highest ratings ever. Costumes by Oscar-winning designer Theodor Pistek (Amadeus).
Gladiator -- Winner of the Oscar for best Costume Design (among other kudos), director Ridley Scott's epic goes back in time to political intrigue circa 180 AD. Russell Crowe stars and Janty Yates (Jude) costumes. Re-released in IMAX theaters as well as new DVD/video release, with plenty of extras. Order at Amazon.com and other online locations.
