Basic Plot:

Earthquakes and a tsunami are headed for Sunset Beach this summer. The natural disasters will cause physical destruction and emotional turmoil. Lives, destroyed. Lovers, in jeopardy. Nothing will ever be the same. Some will be on land and some will be in the ocean, but one thing's for certain: the people of Sunset Beach will exit these experiences as changed people.

Five Week SHOCKWAVE Plot:

Carmen senses a disturbance, though she can't be sure of what will happen. A small tremor rocks the town. Much of the town heads aboard the charity cruise: Sean, Emily, Amy, Brad, Cole, Caitlin, Ricardo, Antonio, Gabi, Bette, Casey, and Sara, as well as Melinda and Bruce, her cameraman, Phillip, and Francesca. Suddenly, a huge earthquake strikes the mainland trapping Olivia and Annie in the Richards' mansion. AJ and Gregory are stranded at the Liberty Corporation construction site, while Virginia and Jimmy seek shelter outside Tyus' apartment that Vanessa is hiding out in. At Cedar Oaks, Ben and Tim are in one room, with Meg and the mystery patient in another.

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake, the residents of Sunset Beach are buried under piles of rubble. Annie digs herself out and finds a trapped Olivia, who demands that she go upstairs to check on Trey. However, the stairway to the second floor has collapsed. As she tries to move the debris away from Olivia, the chandelier falls from the ceiling. At Cedar Oaks, Meg and the woman force open their door, only to see a dead nurse and an impassable hallway. Picking herself up, Vanessa looks for Virginia and Jimmy outside the apartment. Virginia is safe, but Jimmy is nowhere to be seen. Finding his bloody baseball cap, Virginia fears her son is dead because of her sins. In the lab, Michael and Tyus decide they must get to the apartment to check on Vanessa. Working together, the two begin clearing a path to the door, but much of their progress is erased when an aftershock hits. Annie manages to free Olivia just before the chandelier crashes down. Both women then attempt to clear the stairway, in an effort to reach Trey. The baby's cries reassure them that he is still alive. As Virginia is about to confess her evil deeds to Vanessa, Jimmy calls to her. He is buried beneath piles of debris in the hallway. The women save him, but in the process, Virginia becomes trapped. On the cruise ship, the passengers learn that they have lost contact with the shore, but don't see any real cause for concern. A young stranger, who is looking for AJ, arrives at the Liberty Corporation construction site and rescues Gregory and AJ. Leo, the young stranger, turns out to be AJ's son. Meg and Dana realize they can't escape from the room, so they settle down to wait for rescue. Tempers flare between Tim and Ben as they struggle to get free. At the construction site, AJ decides that he, Gregory, and Leo will all go to the Richards' house to check on Trey. Arriving, they find Annie and Olivia upstairs with Lourdes, the maid, who reports that Trey flew out of his crib when the quake struck. Annie then spots Trey across the room and shoves Olivia out of the way so that she can reach him first. Holding the baby, Annie starts toward the others, but the floor collapses in front of her. Tyus and Michael dig their way out of the lab and head to the apartment building. Arriving, they learn that Jimmy is fine, but Vanessa is inside struggling to free Virginia. Meanwhile, Tim and Ben finally emerge from their room and find Hank and Joan outside, unconscious. After reviving Hank and Joan, the group hears Meg's voice and clear a small tunnel so that she can escape. After Ben pulls Meg out, he reaches in for Dana. She is afraid to take his hand, but eventually does so, but Ben loses his grip on her hand. After the floor caves in, Annie and Trey are trapped on one side of the nursery, with a chasm separating them from AJ, Gregory, Olivia, and Leo. When Gregory and Olivia get Annie to pass Trey to them, they discover that he is not breathing. AJ and Leo remain behind to rescue Annie after Olivia and Gregory head to the hospital. Just as everyone thinks they are safe, another earthquake strikes. What's left of the nursery floor collapses beneath Annie, AJ, and Leo. Olivia and Gregory's car is hit by debris while on the freeway. The roof falls in on Michael, Vanessa, Tyus, and Virginia.

As reporter Giselle Fernandez goes on the air to announce the latest developments with the earthquake, a huge tremor strikes. After it subsides, the townspeople again pick themselves up and check for injuries. Meg, Tim, Joan, and Ben are all fine, but Hank is seriously injured. While the others rush him to South Bay General, Tim remains at Cedar Oaks to help Dana. Vanessa and Michael fall through to the basement of the apartment. Meanwhile, above them, a gas line explodes, leaving Tyus and Virginia unconscious. Rescuers find the latter two, but fail to locate Michael and Vanessa. AJ is relieved to see that Leo is all right. Annie is, too, since Lourdes' body broke her fall. Unfortunately, the maid is dead and Annie is buried under rubble, so AJ searches for a lever to free her. Gregory regains consciousness to find the car buried, and Olivia out cold. Olivia gradually comes to and clutches Trey, only to find that the baby has stopped breathing! Meg, Ben, and Joan learn that Hank is in serious condition due to a hematoma. Gregory performs CPR to help Trey start breathing again. Because the car doors are jammed shut, he climbs out the window and notices a live wire near the car, which is leaking gasoline. Olivia tries to get out, but can't; her leg is stuck. Gregory hands Trey to a nearby woman and goes back to help Olivia. Olivia escapes just before the car explodes, and she and Gregory rush Trey to the hospital. A tidal wave is gathering force out at sea, and is on schedule to collide with the Neptune. Due to the ship's broken radio, the seismologist is unable to alert the captain of the impending disaster. The ship's radio is finally repaired, and the captain hears an urgent message: A tsunami is approaching. Ricardo runs to the deck to find Gabi, just as the huge tidal wave hits! As the tsunami hits, the Neptune's panicking passengers are engulfed in a massive wall of water.

As the tidal wave swamps the Neptune, terrified passengers go hurtling across the decks along with most of the ballroom furniture. The captain and first officer are killed instantly. Gabi and Ricardo survive in a submerged deck and quickly try to climb to safety. When power is restored, Antonio begins checking on the wounded while the dazed passengers discover that they're standing on the ceiling of the upside-down ship. Casey and Sara are startled to find themselves clad only in their underwear and sitting in the debris which once was Melinda's stateroom. Sean tries to comfort Emily, who fears that her missing mother may be dead. Later, when Bette turns up in a precarious position, Emily talks her frightened mom into jumping to safety. In the ballroom, the passengers are struggling to survive. Some are already dead from the impact. Ricardo explains to his fellow survivors why they must make their way up to the hull before the ship becomes totally submerged. A sudden explosion rocks the capsized Neptune and sends a torrent of water rushing into Melinda's stateroom. Phillip is unconscious from the fall, and Francesca is hurt. Cole rushes to her side, much to Caitlin's displeasure. Aboard the Neptune, the frightened passengers begin dividing themselves into two camps, one group siding with Ricardo and the others listening to a ship's officer who insists that staying put is the only way to survive. Meanwhile, in the stateroom, Casey and Sara struggle to find an escape hatch before the rushing water rises above their heads. Sara bandages Casey's wounded arm while they wind their way through the flooded corridors. Ricardo tells them that the only hope for them is to climb out of the ballroom to the top of the ship and out. Gabi volunteers to be the first person up the treacherous makeshift ladder, then exhorts the others to believe that Ricardo's plan will work. As another explosion rocks the boat, Ricardo and his small band shudder to hear the screams of the doomed people they left behind in the ballroom. Ricardo shows Gabi and Antonio why approaching the hull could mean a deadly scalding for the first person who attempts to climb past a broken steam valve. Meanwhile, in the apartment basement, Michael and Vanessa are relieved to finally hear someone digging towards them eventually saving them from the ruin. Cole returns to Curt's stateroom to look for the Vargas' short wave radio. When Ricardo's self-confidence begins to flag, Gabi assures her hero she knows he'll find a way to get everyone out alive. A frightened Francesca asks Antonio to hear her confession. Phillip again corners Cole and Caitlin with a gun. Ricardo finally manages to turn off one of the steam valves but warns the others that another pipe could explode at any moment as they try to ascend to the hull. When Francesca tearfully insists on getting something off her chest, Antonio agrees to hear her confession. Phillip shoots out the short wave radio before Cole can send out an SOS. Casey breaks into an emergency supply closet and shows Sara and Melinda how to use the scuba tanks if they end up in the ocean. Bette tries to comfort a worried Emily after Sean volunteers to be the first one up the ladder in the steam-filled air shaft. Holding the gun to Caitlin's head, Phillip orders Cole to lead him to Francesca. After a burst steam pipe sends Bruce to his death, Ricardo has to talk fast to convince his frightened companions to risk the treacherous trip up the air shaft. Word of the off-shore tidal wave brings fresh horror to the dazed earthquake survivors in South Bay's emergency room. Casey, Sara, and Melinda are forced to swim through the submerged lower deck. As Francesca jumps in front of Cole, Phillip pulls the trigger. Gregory, Olivia, and AJ fear for their children when news of the Neptune's distress reaches the airwaves in Sunset Beach. As Antonio tends to the wounded Francesca, an enraged Cole attacks Phillip. Ricardo pulls Gabi to safety after she slips from the ladder during her perilous climb up the air shaft. Casey rages at Melinda for hogging all the oxygen instead of allowing him and Sara to "buddy breathe" when they were underwater. Phillip is killed during the struggle for the gun. As Melinda struggles to retrieve the film containing her blackmail shots, a shark begins to circle closer. Gregory agrees to let AJ accompany him on a helicopter search for the Neptune. Antonio and the others locate Ricardo's party and begin making their way up the shaft. A horrified Sara clings to Casey as the hungry shark finishes off Melinda. A frantic Gabi dives in to save Ricardo after he becomes trapped underwater.

Gabi dives into the submerged potion of the deck and discovers Ricardo pinned underwater beneath a heavy beam. Caitlin and Francesca elect to stay behind and wait for Cole while Sean leads the rest of their group forward to search for Ricardo and Brad. Gabi finally manages to free Ricardo and pulls him to the surface, where she frantically performs CPR. Following a tearful scene with Bette, Emily follows Sean into the water in an attempt to reach the end of the flooded passage. To Gabi's great relief, Ricardo comes to at last just as Sean and Emily emerge. Antonio climbs up the air shaft to join Francesca and Caitlin but Cole runs into trouble during his attempt to ascend to safety. After Brad deserts them to save his own skin, Bette helps a terrified Amy make the underwater journey to the next level. Ricardo locates a blowtorch and begins cutting through a section of the hull. Unable to keep his grip on the brackets, Cole falls through the shaft and disappears into the water while Antonio has to restrain a hysterical Caitlin to prevent her from jumping in after her husband. At South Bay, Annie tells a distraught Meg about the probable fate of the passengers aboard the doomed Neptune. Keeping a wary eye out for sharks, Casey and Sara begin paddling towards shore on their makeshift raft. Ben tries to console a weeping Olivia as she fears that all of her children may have perished in the earthquake and subsequent tidal wave. With the boiler pressure building, Ricardo quietly warns Gabi that if he doesn't breach the hull soon a massive explosion is certain to wipe out the rest of the survivors. Emily assures her grateful mother that despite everything they've been through in years past she does love her very much. Francesca promises God she'll turn over a new leaf if Cole will just come back alive. Gregory and AJ finally arrive in the chopper and are horrified to realize that the Neptune has capsized. After Ricardo manages to cut through the hull, the rescue workers begin lifting survivors into the helicopter. Aboard the rescue chopper, a sobbing Caitlin tells AJ his son is dead. Meanwhile, Ricardo and Antonio leap for the last safety harness just as a huge explosion shatters the hull and sends the Torres brother hurtling into the sea. With a shark fast approaching, Ricardo forces a protesting Antonio to climb into the chopper first. Bette encourages a grieving Caitlin to stay strong for her infant son. As Gabi gratefully clings to Ricardo, AJ leaps into the ocean to retrieve Cole's body. Later, Caitlin weeps tears of joy when her husband is miraculously revived by CPR. Gabi wonders how to break the news about Sara and Casey to Meg. The survivors of the cruise ship disaster make their way back to an earthquake-stricken Sunset Beach, just as Sara and Casey wash up onto a deserted island.
