"Seaman recruit yim reporting as ordered, sir..."
I enlisted in the United States Navy on November 4, 1976.  I reported for boot camp at Recruit Training Center, San Diego.  Being a former Army brat, it was an easy adjustment for me to the strict regimentation than my non-brat shipmates experienced.

My training unit was Recruit Company 022, our Company Commander was Chief Yeoman (YNC) Earl Burns.

This was Chief Burns on a GOOD day...

After graduating from recruit training, I moved next door to Service School Command (SERVSCOLCOM) at Naval Training Center, San Diego.

I attended Basic Electronics/Electrical School (known throughout the Fleet as "BEEP" School), but was academically dropped from the program due to a poor math background (Ohm's law I can handle...when ya hit vectors, you lose me!).

I then became what's called an "IBM" ("Instant Bos'n's Mate"), and was assigned as a deck seaman aboard the combat stores ship, USS WHITE PLAINS (AFS-4).
