The only way to cross the creek is a small boat that will only hold the farmer and one other thing. He cannot leave the goose with the corn because the goose will eat the corn, and he cannot leave the dog alone with the goose for fear the dog will eat the goose. How can the farmer get across with all of his possessions intact?
Challenge Problem
John, Paul,
George, and Ringo are on their way to a concert. They have to be
on stage in 18 minutes. They must cross a bridge to get to the
concert hall. Only two men can walk across the bridge at a time.
Since it is dark, they must have a flashlight to get across. The
flashlight must be carried back and forth every trip. It cannot
be thrown across to save time. Each man crosses the bridge at a
different rate. It takes George 10 minutes, Paul 5 minutes, John
2 minutes, and Ringo 1 minute. They can cross only as fast as the
slowest man walks. Can you get them to the concert on time?
