William Shakespeare
Shakespeare performed
his plays at the Globe theatre. The Globe was octagonal in shape and was
constructed in 1599 on the banks of the Thames River, near the city of London.
Play time was at 2:00 and a penny would get you in the door. The general
crowd watched the plays from the pit and were called penny stinkards. An
additional fee could get you a seat in the several levels of seats called
the galleries. Royalty or noblemen watched from box seats. The capacity for
the play performance was 2,000. Sound effects were made in the huts (i.e.,
rolling cannon balls across the floor for thunder). Ghosts could appear on
stage through trap doors. The public knew there would be a play by flags,
trumpets, and fliers. A red flag meant a history play would be performed,
and a tragedy was indicated by a black flag.
