Subject: Parade and Trusting Beatrice

Hey, everyone--

I found a small (microscopic) picture of Steve in Parade, a little news
magazine that comes with the Sunday paper down here (the Miami Herald). He
isn't even mentioned by name ("Bruce Willis and co-stars"). He's wearing a
red space suit and standing with about 5 other guys. I have a feeling that
pic will be popping up elsewhere, so don't fret if your newspaper didn't have
it. (It was in last Sunday's edition). It also says part of the movie was
filmed in Florida. RATS! Faraway, so close...

I haven't been able to find "Trusting Beatrice" anywhere. Anyone have any
advice on this?

Thanks,
Puck

Hi,

I just saw TRUSTING BEATRICE a couple months ago and, didn't like it
too much, but I loved Steve in it. Even though he only has like, three
scenes.

I also saw ME AND THE MOB, BORDERS, & KISS DADDY GOODNIGHT. So, I can
take those off my list of Steve movies that I haven't seen. ME AND THE
MOB was horrible. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long to see
Steve's part -- it's at the beginning, and it's small. He's doing the
sleazy, paranoid guy thing. His part in BORDERS is bigger. He looks
soooo young in that one! KISS DADDY GOODNIGHT: to be honest, I didn't
even watch all of it -- only the Steve part (small, of course). He
always looks cute! But, to those of you who won't rent or watch a
movie only because Steve's in it, I suggest that you stay away from
KDG, and M&TM. BORDERS is a shorter docudrama that deals with how the
government used (& still uses) young, naive physics scientists to make
nuclear weapons. If you don't like to watch that kind of stuff, you
probably shouldn't rent that one.

Check ya later,

You'll find that the purchase price for videos that just came out are
sometimes $80, usually more. Give it a month, I think, and you should
find it at a more reasonable price. Video catalogs are a great place to
check.

SPLASH. A dash of cold water for ya. LIO (which someone was saying cost $80)
did NOT just come out on video. It was dubbed best video release of 1995 by
Siskel and Ebert. I think, if it was expensive then and it's still expensive
now, it's gonna stay expensive.

Funny that the LIO seeker should mention the video not being at the local video
store. It aint at mine, either, despite my recommending it and Siskel
and Ebert honoring it. So answer me this. If the film tanked at the box
office, isn't being screened on cable stations, and isn't being carried
by many video stores...how could Tom DiCillo possibly get financing for a
sequel? It hasn't enjoyed success on any level except among an esoteric
group of fans.

{Having looked at the transcript/interview that alluded to a "sequel" for
LiO, I found that the person asking the questions was merely saying how
cool it would be for there to be a sequel. There was nothing about
DiCillo actually planning on even wanting to do a sequel.}

I'm really looking forward to Buscemi on SNL, even though I think SNL's been
sour for a very long time. I just hope they don't do another cheesy tarantino

Hi there!

It's Tricia, I'm the one looking for LIO. I wasn't very clear on what I meant
by just coming out on video. I know that it's been out for a while on video
but the article I read said it was being released on video for sale price like
around $14.99-$19.99 instead of the $80.00 price. When movies come out they
come out for rental price and sale price. Rental price is sky-high (like
$80.00) for video stores to buy to put out for rent and sale price is the $15.
to $20. range for the average person to buy. Living In Oblivion apparently
has only been out for rental price. The reason I'm sending this to the list
instead of personal reply is because I was wondering if anyone has any
information on this. Thanks

"Trusting Beatrice" is basically about a woman and her child and the guy
who falls in love with them. The woman shrouds herself in mystery and keeps
everyone at arm's length. This is all irrelevant; of course we only care
about Steve's significance. He has a small part (though dispersed through
several scenes) as a lawyer. I found him particularly amusing in this one
though.

It's interesting to me that there are a lot of female fans of Buscemi on the
list.

I am not being sexist, but to back up my point:

The girls I go to school with, they know of the 'sex-appeal' actors, but the
movie going girls who watch independent films really love Buscemi. I was just
wondering why that is, obviously not sex-appeal, sorry Steve, becuase, let's
face it, he's funny-looking. The males who I know who watch movies know much
less of his work, except Reservoir Dogs.

Wondering, hope some people can explain?

I can only speak for myself here, but I found Steve to be sexually appealing
only after growing to appreciate his enormous talent. If he were not such a
great actor, I might not find him as attractive. It takes something more
than just looks to get my attention!

Hi Everyone,

I'm just hanging out waiting for more people to post to the list, and am
taking the time to look for new things on the web about Steve. Well, I
stumbled on a Tim Roth page that has an article from something called Bomb
that is an interview of Roth done by Steve. (Steve has also done one of
Dermot Mulroney.) Anyway, for those that want to check it out, the URL is
as follows:

I personally find it interesting because the people who know each other
always ask more interesting questions. (After all, why do they want to

Hi--

sorry to have gotten anybody's hopes up about a LIO sequel. When I
wrote that DiCillo was talking about the possibility of a sequel, I
didn't mean anything definite. I just meant that he was kind of
throwing the idea around. BUT -- That's how sequels get started; the
director, or actors start thinking & talking about the possibility --
What if?

Speaking of "What if," I've often wondered if Steve has ever seen what
we say about him. Even if he isn't on the list himself, he could have
a friend who is.

You shouldn't be surprised if that is the case. I mean, come on, there wouldn't
be flaks and press clipping services if actors (among others) weren't addicted
to seeking out all mentions and discussion of themselves. Even Steve took a
flak to Sundance with him the year LIO played there. [source - Tom DiCillo's

Darn straight. What have we got to lose from hoping? It's fun to speculate.
Does anybody else have thoughts/ ideas on content? Is Wanda with Chad? Back
with Wolf? Is Nick married to Nicole? Ooh, ooh, how about this? (not to be
hung up on awards shows, they just seem like a valid plot device). Nick and
Wolf have made another small flick while Wanda and Bob and... crud, what's the
focus-puller's name? Kevin Corrigan's character?...anyway, those three have
made TSUNAMI w/ Chad. So it's Awards weekend in March and the small flick is up
for a Spirit Award and the big flick is up for an Oscar. They all live in New
York and are flying out for the awards when a snowstorm grounds them in a
Nebraska airport.

I found an interesting page about Steve where he says about his roles in such
films as "Fargo" and others.....

(Text) But in person, Buscemi appears remarkably low-key and modest, without a
hint of his frazzled screen personal.

(Steve) "These characters are so far from the image I have of myself" he says
about his collection of psychos. "And yet I always find something withing the
character to hook into, so I can put in some of myself. Everybody has a dark

A pretty good interview. They talked about the movies Steve's in currently
and how he's typecast as a "creepy guy" then went on to explain how that
came about. Steve mentioned how his dad was into the occult and how his dad
was the person who got him started in the bad guy roles. Conan then
mentioned how they'd seen each other at the opening of The Wedding Singer

his surprise wrestling move from his high school days.

My only complaint was that Steve's voice seemed quiter than I'm used to.

Correct me if I'm wrong. SMOKE was the straight fictional piece and BLUE IN THE
FACE was a "behind the scenes" thing with snippets of the cast as themselves as

{Actually, BinF was mainly improv using the same characters as Smoke and

In my experience, men know who he is, but not his name. I usually
have to go down the list until something clicks, then I get "Yeah, he's
great."

My personal experience on the road to non-obsessive Steve worship: I
didn't really like him at first because in the roles I saw he reminded me
too much of my ex-husband (short NY guy w/attitude), but I saw Con Air,
and something clicked. I realized he was really good, and he seems to get
the best lines in his movies. I wandered through the web to find anything
on him, ended up here, and taped Trees Lounge off Showtime. After that
there was no hope, I was hooked. I have great admiration for
writer/director/actors; Kenneth Branagh being at the top of the list.

There's just something about him that's attractive to me. Such a
small percentage of the world looks like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, that
I put little stock in looks alone. That and I have strange tastes to start
with...

Hello everyone!!! Conan was great...."I bow to Steve Buscemi." I can't

Anyways....my local paper here in dayton, ohio has a section called the "Go!"
The Real Blonde opened here (in one theater) and they critiqued it. They
rate movies out of 4 stars...the Real Blonde got two and a half stars.

Here is what the article said (Steve is mentioned once at the end):

'Real Blonde' Dares To Be Profound: Exploration of freedom vs. duty is only
skin deep

Tom DiCillo turns his satirical eye to the shallow world of New York City
models and actors in The Real Blonde, a quirky romantic comedy about the
search for sincerity.

The opening-night selection at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival follows the
thread of DiCillo's previous efforts, which include "Living in Oblivion" and
"Box of Moonlight," by exploring the tension between independence and
responsibility. Unfortunately, his scattered but enjoyable ensemble piece
doesn't peer beneath the surface level.

DiCillo's meandering screenplay never really settles into a specific plot,
seeming instead like a collision of self-absorbed characters. Only the
central couple, Joe (Matthew Modine) and Mary (Catherine Keener), are fairly
well realized.

The comic look at urban relationships is entertaining, nonetheless.

Joe is a struggling actor whose high standards keep him from working as
anything but a waiter for the fastitioud Ernst (Christopher Lloyd). At
35, Joe has no agent, credits, or money. The latter is a constant source
of tension between Joe and his live-in lover, Mary, a makeup artist for a
hotshot fashion photographer named Blair (Marlo Thomas).

Mary's job also includes appeasing high-strung models such as the
insecure Sahara (Bridgette Wilson), a bottle blonde who finds spirituality
in animated Disney movies. Mary vents her frustration with the help of a
creepy therapist (Buck Henry) and a verbally abusive self-defense
instructor (Denis Leary).

Completing the picture is Joe's insensitive friend Bob (Maxwell
Caulfield), a fellow waiter who lands a role on a daytime soap and longs
to date a true blonde. Bob's conquests include his vampy co-star, Kelly
(Daryl Hannah), and Sahara, which brings things full-circle.

Joe is obsessed with being a "real" actor. Mary wants Joe to settle down
and get "real." Bob will only be happy with a "real" blonde. The story,
like their lives, follows a spiral pattern in which situations, character
and lines of dialogue that repeatedly cycles. People meet without ever
really connecting, sharing superficial interests and careers more than
they share themselves.

DiCillo lampoons the objectification of women while staking his usual
battle between idealism and cynicism, as represented by Joe, who abandons
his principles to land an agent (Kathleen Turner) and winds up working in
a Madonna video.

The superb supporting cast also includes Steve Buscemi, who reprises his
Living in Oblivion role as a harried director; Showgirls' Elizabeth
Berkley as Madonna's bleached-blonde body double; and comic Dave Chappelle
(from Con Air), who provides the film's most hilarious moment as a
Holocaust revisionist.

Ultimately, The Real Blonde isn't as shallow as its characters, but it's

I was at Best Buy tonight and decided to wander through the video section
and see how many Steve movies they had. I picked up a widescreen
collector's set of Fargo with a snow globe where Steve? is being put into
the wood chipper. It includes letterbox VHS with exclusive outtakes and
theatrical trailer. Cost: 29.99. I also found a Special Collector's Edition
of Pulp Fiction with bonus scenes hosted by Quentin Tarantino. Cost: 9.99.
I also picked up Happy Gilmore, even though Steve's role is very minor, as
I happen to like the movie. cost: 9.99.

I also picked up From Duck til Dawn, not sure whether Steve was in it or
not, and only just now finding out that he's not in it. Anyone know where
there's a concise list of movies he's appeared in? I know Marni has a nice
list, but that's a bit more detailed than I want.

I also was tempted to pick up a double CD set containing the sound tracks
to Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, with a bonus 20 page booklet containing
interviews with Quentin, however, I suspect I'm getting the Resevoir Dogs
soundtrack for my birthday this month, so I decided to wait.

Hi, everyone!

Haven't been on line for a couple of days and found oodles of mail from you
guys! After spending an hour reading it, I just had to respond to a couple of
comments:

>It's interesting to me that there are a lot of female fans of Buscemi on the
>list. I was just wondering why that is, obviously not sex-appeal, sorry
>Steve, becuase, let's face it, he's funny-looking.

What do you mean, "obviously not sex appeal?" YES, SEX APPEAL!!! Look,
I'm attracted to Steve Buscemi and not Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise and I make
no apologies. Wouldn't the world be boring if there were only "attractive"
people and "non-attractive" people? Yes, I respect Steve's acting
abilities, find him funny, etc. etc. But I just find him attractive
because, well, I do. Think about it, Anthony Hopkins is a great actor, and
Billy Crystal is really funny, but...sexy? I don't think so. Steve's got
something else. And whatever it is, it drives me nuts.

>I was wondering why some people have interest mainly foir sex appeal,
>but for Steve the females seem to have a type of Woody Allen affection,
>interesting, I'll note this in my book"females and their
>infatuations"(kidding).

WOODY ALLEN???? ICK!!! Now there's someone who's talented and funny and not
even the least bit sexy.

>Did anyone else know that Steve wrestled in high school? His wrestling
>move on Andy was hilarious!

Yeah, I saw his high school wrestling pictures on The Steve Buscemi Worship
Page. You need to check out that site if you haven't yet. There are some
awesome pictures there.

>Does anyone know if The Real Blonde is going into general release?

It played for a week at a city about an hour away from me, then
disappeared into the wild blue yonder. I'm hoping one of the local video
stores will have maybe one copy for rent at some point. I've given up
hope of it appearing at the multiplexes real soon.

Steve on Conan was awesome. I would love to see him as a vampire.
Hopefully someone saw the show and is writing a part for him! Wonder how
Anne Rice would have reacted to Steve as Lestat? hmmmm. But he does have
a point about the "creepy guy" thing. Wonder how much he was joking and
how much he was serious.

SNL should be a riot -- Steve's one of those guys who cracks me up as
soon as he shows up on the screen. Others are John Lovitz and Christopher
Walken. So even though the skits will probably be lame, I'll be laughing
my butt off. And I'll be thinking of the rest of you laughing your butts
off too.

Well, gotta go--- this pyramid on my head is getting pretty darn heavy
(am I a devoted fan or what?)

Happy Gilmore? Surely Steve is not in that one? Are you confusing it with
Billy Madison or some other movie?

Go to http://us.imdb.com/search and do a search on Steve Buscemi, you
should have a pretty complete list of his films and tv-appearances.

Regarding all of this "sexy Steve" stuff:

My interest in Steve has always been his uniqueness in films. Something
about him rivets my attention in a way that no other actor does. But alas,
even I have succumbed, and it has ultimately turned into a crush on him
too. He has beautiful hands.

I was at a wedding a few months back, talking to an old friend about
movies. I was trying to describe who Steve was, and just as I was saying,
"He was in Fargo, and Living in Oblivion, and--" another woman came over
and interrupted. "Oh my god," she said, "are you talking about Steve
Buscemi, sex god of the '90's?" It was classic. Ever since then, I've
always mentally bestowed that title upon him.

Which movie do you think Steve looked cutest in?

GENTLEMEN
In which movie would you most like to be Steve (rather Steve's character)?

I personally can't choose. It's tied amongst Reservoir Dogs, Ed and His Dead
Mother, Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead (he looks like a mobster and I
LOVE mobsters!), Parting Glances, In the Soup, and Twenty Bucks.

The interview on Conan was pretty good. I haven't watched all of SNL yet,

Just had to pass along a couple of comments about Saturday's SNL with Steve.
If you haven't seen it yet, you may want to skip this or save it til later.

With regard to the opening monologue, I used to do improv professionally and I
found Steve's mockery of it hilarious. You have no idea the kind of stupid
stuff we used to get sometimes. And we ALL wanted to yell out, "what kind of
stupid suggestion is that?" -- but of course we didn't.

With regard to "Goth Talk" -- PAN DOWN! PAN DOWN! :-)

With regard to "Alice in Wonderland" -- stupid sketch, but kudos to Steve for
holding his own with John Hurt.

"Judge Judy" was the highlight of the entire evening, I thought. Steve
gettin' jiggy with it -- classic. (although they could have found more
flattering pants)

But you gotta give him credit, he took a lot of poorly written material and
made it far more entertaining than it should have been. The "Job Interview"
and "Stuff We Made" sketches would have been unwatchable without Steve.

And what was up with that Truck Museum thing? Steve was cute, but was there
a point?

One more thing, I would absolutely KILL for any one of those pictures they
showed between commercials. All of them looked SO hot! Perhaps there's a way
to transfer them from video to paper or something. Or perhaps SNL has copies.
Anyone have any ideas on this?

Even though roles in big movies like Armageddon and Con Air pay more
and help him fame-wise, I'd rather see Steve doing more indie-movies
and smaller movies in general. And simply because Steve just won't ever
get a big role in a big movie, he's not that kind of an actor.
So, rather than seeing him in ten small roles per year, I'd like to

I thought some of you might be interested in.

Tower Outlet had about 4 copies of Somebody to Love for about $10 plus
tax. They also had about 4 copies of Trees Lounge for about $13 plus tax.
The only catch with these films is that the boxes are cut up and the tapes
are pre-viewed. Essentially, these are the left-overs after they are no
longer new releases. This is where the phrase "buyer beware" comes into
play.

Tower Video had the special release of Fargo with the snowglobe for $34
