Arwen reading      Arwen Undomiel the Evenstar ~ Liv Tyler.

Liv Tyler plays the Elven Princess Arwen, also called Undomiel, daughter to Lord Elrond of Rivendell.  Aragorn fell in love with Arwen at first glance.  He was raised in Rivendell by Elrond, but had not met Arwen until he was older as she had been living in Lothlorien with Arwen leaving Rivendellher grandmother, Galadriel.  Arwen and Aragorn wish to be together but it is against Elrond's wishes as he feels Arwen should leave Middle-earth to the Undying Lands to live immortal with her own kind.  Their love mimics the older tale of Beren and the Luthien (whom Arwen is a descendant of).

"I see it as an honour to be one of only a few women in the picture and to bring the feminine touch to the story."  On her character's feelings towards Aragorn, "When you're in Arwen close-uplove, you want to spend all your time with that person, and she finds it difficult that they can't be together."  During filming, Liv left her pair of prosthetic ears on the dashboard of her car.  When she returned they had melted.

Arwen's character in the films was originally viewed more as a warrior princess to be covered in mud and blood for a good part of the time.  But the image didn't really work and her character was changed to be much softer and feminine after a couple of costume fittings.  Plus, Liv was originally trying to fight in a long, flowing dress that she was tripping over or getting whipped in the face with.Arwen close-up

Arwen's horse that was used for the chase scene on the way to the Ford of Bruinen (ridden by riding double Jane Abbot) was actually much too fast for the other horses to catch it even if they wanted to.  The black horses were running at their top speed and could not get near enough to her.

On Arwen's relationship with Aragorn, "It's about mortality versus immortality.  Those are the difficulties of Arwen and Aragorn being together.  But they can't say good-bye."

As Beren looked into her eyes Within the shadows of her hair,

The trembling starlight of the skies He saw there mirrored shimmering.

Tinuviel the elven-fair, Immortal maiden elven-wise,

About him cast her shadowy hair And arms like silver glimmering.

Long was the way that fate them bore, O'er stony mountains cold and grey,

Through halls of iron and darkling door, And woods of nightshade morrowless.

The Sundering Seas between them lay, And yet at last they met once more,

And long ago they passed away In the forest singing sorrowless.
