Eowyn standing next to horse    Eowyn the Lady of Rohan ~ Miranda Otto.

King Theoden's wife Elfhild died giving birth to their son, Theodred.  Following this, Theoden lost both his sister, Theodwyn and her husband Eomund - Marshal of the Mark.  Eomund died at the hand of Orcs and Theodwyn soon passed away out of grief, leaving behindEowyn looking down on steps their two young children Eowyn and Eomer.  Theoden raised his niece and nephew as if they were his own.

"Yet I do not bid you flee from peril, but to ride to battle where your sword may win renown and victory."

Eowyn has not had a carefree life and laughter does not come easily to her.  She has been raised to have the valor and fighting skills of a man, but is increasingly frustrated that she cannot use these qualities as she is continuously treated like a lady.  King Theoden loves her like a daughter, but out of protection, does not allow her to live up to her potential.

"Generally in the myths and legends we hear as young girls, we're given Sleeping Beauty, we're given Cinderella.  They're all stories about women who are in difficult situations who Eowyn close-upare then saved by men.  But Eowyn is a character who is in a difficult situation and must become empowered or lose everything.  Here is this amazing man, Aragorn, who represents everything that she wants to happen.  And yet she knows she must find the strength within to save herself and her people."  She has a crush on Aragorn, but knows and respects that he is in love with another.

"Eowyn in the book is described as the daughter of kings.  It's a very difficult time in Rohan and she has had to watch the whole house deteriorate, the whole lineage decline.  She wants to spur Theoden into action, but she is powerless to do that to her king."

Eowyn talking to Aragorn     The role of Eowyn was first offered to Irish actress Alison Doody in December 1999, who had to decline the part because she had just given birth to her second daughter.  Miranda then auditioned for the same role.  "There are very few women in The Lord of the Rings.  Eowyn is the first real human female character.  Galadriel and Arwen, who are both Elves, were introduced in the first film.  But the second film takes you into the world of human beings."

Arise now, arise, Riders of Theoden!  Dire deeds awake, dark is it eastward.

Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!  Forth Eorlingas!

Eowyn in dark gown      Referring to costume designer Ngila Dickson: "As a child, I used to fantasize about being a medieval princess and, what do you know, I got to be one - thanks to Ngila's genius!"  The fabrics used for Eowyn's costumes differed from Arwen's and Galadriel's - using more wools and brocades.  "We decided that since Eowyn was human you needed to feel as if you could reach out and touch her, unlike Arwen and Galadriel who are Elves and, therefore more illusive, more like a trick of the light."

"Fair and cold, like a morning of pale spring."

"I turned up in New Zealand burdened by various personal problems and wondering how on earth I was ever going to become this emotionally complex, fearlessly determined character.  Quite simply, Ngila transformed me.  She spent a long time perfecting necklines and sleeve lengths, every possible detail, to get it exactly right for me.  It was really in the wardrobe and the sword-fighting classes that I began to see, in a very physical sense, who this woman was."  The story of The Lord of the Rings is imagined to take place about 6000 years ago from present day.

"She's sort of grown up in a world of men;  she's been brought up to fight, she's been brought up to ride.  She's surrounded by men..and yet she's not allowed to be a man."Eowyn in caves at Helm's Deep

"Ah, but you are alone. Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink, the walls of your bower closing in about you, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in? So fair, yet so cold like a morning of pale Spring still clinging to Winter."

"At some level it stops and she gets left at home, because she is the only daughter and because she is a woman and they want to protect her..but she doesn't want to be protected."
