"He is bold, more bold than many deem... and yet a man of hardihood and swift judgment in the field.
But such is Faramir."  ~Beregond.

During Boromir's death scene, a faint Elvish song can be heard in the background with the music.  The words are actually a verse of Faramir's that have been translated into Elvish: "I do not love the sword for it's brightness or the arrow for it's swiftness.  I love only that which they defend."Faramir in dream

He turned and saw the Lady Eowyn of Rohan; and he was moved with pity, for he saw that she was hurt, and his clear sight perceived her sorrow and unrest.

While Faramir was recovering from his injuries (sustained in the attempt of reclaiming Osgiliath) in the Houses of Healing, he came across Eowyn who was still recovering from her own injuries after slaying the Witch King.  Eowyn wished to leave - to not be healed, but return to battle with her brother Eomer or die in battle like her uncle, Theoden.

Faramir profile     He looked at her, and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart.  And she looked at him and saw the grave tenderness in his eyes, and yet knew, for she was bred among men of war, that here was one whom no Rider of the Mark would outmatch in battle.

"Then Eowyn of Rohan, I say to you that you are beautiful.  In the valleys of our hills there are flowers fair and bright, and maidens fairer still;  but neither flower nor lady have I seen till now in Gondor so lovely, and so sorrowful.  It may be that only a few days are left ere darkness falls upon our world, and when it comes I hope to face it steadily;  but it would ease my heart, if while the Sun yet shines, I could see you still.  For you and I have both passed under the wings of the Shadow, and the same hand drew us back."

Faramir wished to learn more of Eowyn and called upon Merry to learn all that he could.  In the days that followed, Faramir and Eowyn walked daily in the gardens of the Houses of Healing and when in his heart, he knew that the Dark Lord had been overthrown, he stooped and kissed her brow.  Soon after this, Faramir saw her seldom as he was busy Faramir in dreamtaking over as Steward until the time of his replacement, and Eowyn remained in the Houses of Healing, but again became pale and sorrowful.  Faramir saw this and aware of her feelings towards Aragorn, professed his love for her and asked of her true feelings.

"For so he is, a lord among men, the greatest that now is.  But when he gave you only understanding and pity, then you desired to have nothing, unless a brave death in battle."

And from this love, the darkness over her passed and she finally understood her heart.  Faramir asked for her hand in marriage and she was healed.

"I stand in Minas Anor, the Tower of the Sun and behold!  The Shadow has departed!  I will be a shieldmaiden no longer, nor vie with the great Riders, nor take joy only in the songs of slaying.  I will be a healer, and love all things that grow and are not barren.  No longer do I desire to be a queen."

After Aragorn was crowned as King, he gave Faramir the land of Ithilien to be his princedom and Eowyn and Faramir were wed - a new bond formed between the Mark and Gondor.
