Frodo in Return of the King   Sam holding Frodo on Mount Doom

"In Frodo's darkest hour, it's really Sam that's able to pull Frodo together.  In some ways, that's more obviously heroic than what Frodo does."  ~Elijah Wood.

The book goes into more detail about Frodo's illnesses upon returning to the Shire before he leaves for the Grey Havens, such as falling ill during the first anniversary after being stung by Shelob.  "He's lost a piece of his soul.  He'll never be the hobbit that he once was."  Some fans have mistaken Valinor for heaven and think that Frodo has left Middle-earth to die.  But it is just the opposite.  Valinor is actually a hidden land to the west across the sea (which is described in great detail in The Silmarillion) - a land created as a paradise for the immortal Elves before Middle-earth was formed.  A place that Frodo can be healed and be whole again. In Sam's elder years when Elenor is grown and Rose has passed on, he actually takes a ship across the sea as well and joins Frodo in Valinor as the last Ring-bearer to leave Middle-earth.
