Pippin at Weathertop     Peregrin Took ~ Billy Boyd.

"Pippin is an individual, he has a lot of spontaneity.  He also sees life from a slightly different angle to most people."

Billy Boyd plays Pippin, cousin (and friend) to Frodo and best friend of Merry.  He is the youngest of the hobbits - roughly 20 years younger than Frodo.  (In fact, Billy is actually the eldest of the hobbit actors).  "It's not really possible to speak about Pippin without Merry and Pippin in Lothlorienmentioning Merry.  His whole life revolves around his friends and Merry in particular.  They are just like the closest of friends so that you really can't imagine either of them doing anything without the other."

"Although Pippin has never left the Shire, he is a Took and comes from a family that is known for being a bit adventurous and likely to fly off the handle and do things that other hobbits would consider to be not quite hobbit-like!  What's more, Pippin does have a habit of doing the wrong things at the wrong time!  Although to be fair, as the story develops, we see Pippin going through all kinds of experiences and becoming more mature."

Pippin holding staff and hat in Moria     On the hobbit's masked doubles, "And that was really weird, seeing someone who looks like you from the back doing what you were doing and wearing your face - except that when you caught it from odd angles it didn't look right, because of course, you never think you look like what you look like!"  Born on August 28, 1968 in Glasgow, Scotland, Billy is a musician as well as an actor: playing bass, drums, guitar, and singing both baritone and tenor.

"What about Elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper?"

Billy in interview     "Getting into your feet took over an hour every morning of every day.  It would be 4:30 am and you'd have to stand still with your own feet inside a pair of rubber feet!  That was strange!  Still, at least I got through a lot of books!"

On New Zealand's landscapes and how they relate to the story, "There are many parts that are really like Scotland - only bigger!  Maybe it's Scotland as seen by a Pippin on pillowhobbit!  Think of the size of Middle-earth compared to the Shire, where the hobbits live, which is a country in its own right: the landscape just keeps opening up and opening up and every place is new and different.  So the folk in the Shire have no idea that Elves live in trees in Lothlorien, or that Dwarves once lived in a huge underground city beneath the mountains."

"Anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of... mission... quest... thing."
