Pennsylvania Hex Signs
It is sometimes difficult to find people who agree as to the origin and purpose of Hex signs so readily associated with Amish Country or the Pennsylvania Dutch. Some say the designs were brought with the German people who came to PA searching for religious freedom and that these designs were symbols found on their birth certificates, pottery, furniture, etc. Others say these designs were simply a way for a poor farmer to cheaply and quickly "prettify" a barn or other building that was badly in need of repairs. Still others say that the sign has magical properties and is a "painted" prayer or petition to God. And, yet others say…..well , you get the point, many different people many different ideas. But, you needn't have an opinion of their origin and use in order to enjoy their beauty.
