A Brief History of the DeNatale and Amadeo Families

The DeNatale Family of Palermo

The Amadeo Family of Avellino

The earliest DeNatale ancestor whom I have been able to trace is Domenico Maria DeNatale. It is believed that Domenico was born in Palermo, Sicily around 1780. Domenico was married to Gaetana DeFalco (or Falco), whom we believe was also of Palermitano origin. We know nothing of Domenico's occupation, but believe that he was of the upper-middle class.

Domenico and Gaetana had at least two children, Biagio DeNatale, who was born around 1800 in Palermo and Giovanni Battista DeNatale, who was born in Palermo around 1806. It is interesting to note that Biagio and Giovanni Battista married sisters. On November 19, 1820, Biagio married Rosalia/Rosaria Paratore, daughter of Giuseppe Paratore and Giuseppa Lucchese/Lucchesi. On September 3, 1826, Giovanni Battista married her sister Provvidenza. At present, we have no information about the descendants, if any, of Giovanni Battista and Provvidenza.

Biagio and Rosalia had at least seven children, all sons:

  • Antonio - born in Palermo on October 6, 1823,
  • Giuseppe Maria Domenico, I - born in Palermo May 20, 1825, died in 1826,
  • Giuseppe Maria Domenico, II - born in Palermo October 30, 1826,
  • Domenico, born in Palermo September 9, 1828,
  • Giovanni, born in Palermo September 11, 1830,.
  • Francesco, born in Palermo October 11, 1832, and
  • Mariano, born in Palermo August 23, 1834.

We know nothing about any of these children other than the second Giuseppe. Giuseppe became a lawyer and notary who practiced in the Province of Avellino. On October 12, 1881, in Forino, Province of Avellino, Giuseppe married Margherita Maria Giuseppa Valentino, who had been born on March 15, 1830, in Monteforte Irpino, Avellino Province. Margherita was the daughter of Pasquale Valentino (born in 1798) and Maria Giuseppa Santulli.

To the best of our knowledge, Giuseppe and Margherita had only one child, their son Biagio DeNatale, who was born on February 8, 1864, in Contrada, Avellino Province. On April 19, 1888, Biagio married Elena Amadeo of the City of Avellino.

  • Our research on the Amadeo family begins with Antonio Amadeo, glass blower by trade, and his wife Gaetana Tupo, who were both born circa 1780 and lived in Avellino. Antonio and Gaetana had at least one child, their son Federigo (Errico) Amadeo, who was born in Avellino around 1807. Federigo was a tailor and hatter, who married Antonia Candola, the daughter of Stefano Candola (a funeral director) and Rosaria Passola, in Avellino on September 1, 1832.

    .

Federico and Antonia had at least five children:

  • a son, Raffaele Amadeo, born in Avellino December 28, 1833,
  • a daughter, Amarosina Amadeo, born in Avellino May 9, 1835,
  • a son, Antonio Generoso Amadeo, born in Avellino October 12, 1837,
  • a son, Alfonso Amadeo, born in Avellino June 28, 1839, and
  • a daughter, Rosaria Maria Concetta Amadeo, born in Avellino June 10, 1843.
    .

    .

At present, the only one of these children whom we have researched is Alfonso, who followed his father's profession of hatter. On November 29, 1862, Alfonso married Saveria Tulimiero (born in Avellino on January 2, 1833), the daughter of Raffaele Tulimiero (born to Francesco Tulimiero and Saveria DiVenezia, innkeepers, in Montefredane, Avellino Province on April 3, 1810), and Concetta Forte (born to Agostino Forte and Carmela Battista in Avellino around 1812). .

    .

According to family tradition Alfonso and Saveria had at least three children. However, at present I am only aware of their daughter Elena Amadeo, who was born in Avellino on April 26, 1868, and married Biagio DeNatale, a goldsmith, on April 19, 1888.

  • The Family of Biagio and Elena

While living in Avellino, Biagio and Elena started their family. The following children were born in Avellino:

  • a daughter, Margherita, born March 2, 1889,
  • a son, Giuseppe Alfonso Mariano, born January 16, 1891,
  • a son, Alfonso Alfredo Attanasio, born March 10, 1892,
  • a son, Quirino Anselmo Teodoro, born October 11, 1894, and
  • a son, Anacleto Attilio Annibale, born May 13, 1896, died by 1897.

In 1897, Biagio and Elena decided to emigrate to the United States. Leaving Margherita and Quirino with Elena's parents in Avellino, they took Giuseppe and Alfonso aboard the SS Clive, which arrived in New York on March 29, 1897. Margherita and Quirino followed about a year later, after the family had become somewhat settled, arriving aboard the SS Spartan Prince on March 17, 1898.

They had seven more children in New York:

  • a son, Antonio, born June 28, 1902, died April 1, 1903,
  • a daughter, Adelaide (known as Ida), born January 3, 1904,
  • a daughter, Saveria, born January 10, 1905, died May 16, 1906,
  • a son, Esposito (known as Peter), born October 27, 1906,
  • a son, Biagio (Blase), born February 11, 1908,
  • a daughter, Natalia (Natalie), Born December 2, 1909, and
  • a daughter, Lena, born September 7, 1913.
