The Wreck of the George Washington
Photo circa 1895
Built by William A. Rive of Great Falls Village The George Washington was the first boat to traverse the entire length of the canal. She was fitted out as a passenger boat including a bar, the proprieters hoping to utilize the canal for passenger service. This however did not pan out and the "George Washington" was refitted for hauling freight. She suffered a common end for a canal boat. Abondoned below Kemp's Locks, she slowly disappeared.
