Sebago Lake to Harrison
Upon reaching the Basin in Windham, the canal boats would leave the dug canal. They
would enter the lake and river section of the route. Masts would be "walked up"
and sails set. The boats would sail or pole their way accross the Basin to Whites Bridge.
There they would cross into Sebago Lake and sail to the mouth of the Songo River.
At the Songo the poles would be broken out and the boats would be polled up the Songo.
Although the Songo is a most a mile long as the crow flies, the countless twists and bends
add up to make the run over 2 miles long. At the point where the Crooked River meets the
Songo is Songo Lock.
After passing thru the Songo Lock, the boats would enter Brandy Pond. The story goes that
a barrel of brandy was lost off a boat on the pond and never found. Hence the name. The
boats would cross Brandy Pond and enter Long Lake. From there, they could sail to Naples,
Bridgton or to Harrison at the top of the lake. The original plans called for a dug
section to take boats on to Oxford. This section was never built. |
