Westbrook Street

Westbrook Street gives us a brief but rewarding look at the canal. The street runs along the divide of fields to the west and woods to the east. Near the western side of the turnpike overpass a finger of trees heads west for a thousand feet or so. When you slow and look up this finger of trees your are presented with the old canal bed. A little overgrown, but still holding water.
About a quarter mile west of Westbrook Street was the first of the "Seven Locks". This ended the "Seven Mile Level" and started the final descent to the tidewater. According to Ernest Knight, the lock itself is located behind a barn and in the 70's was used as a dump spot for the farm. A local resident recently informed me the present farm owner is not friendly to visitors.
The intrepid hiker can walk the towpath east to the fence for the turnpike. Just inside the fence is the remains of the second lock in the series.

Directions to the Wesbrook Street Site

Take Westbrook Street west from Stroudwater or Stroudwater Street east from Westbrook. The canal is about 1000 feet west of the turnpike overpass. See map below.
