WW1 German and Canadian Soldier
German
infantryman, 1917.Still wearing the feldgrau uniform of 1914, the
German infantryman's pristine smartness had been allowed to
decline under the exigencies and demands of trench warfare.Note
that all German front line troops had by this date been issued
with the "coal-scuttle helmet" which can be
distinguished from its WW2 counterpart by the depth of the skirt
at the back and the twin protuberances at the side, the latter
left by the manufacturing process. The soldier in the illustration
is carrying the Gewerh 98a carbine, favoured over the basic rifle
by many for its shorter length, and consequent handiness. In his
left hand he is carrying an ammunition box, while there can also
seen the handle of his entrenching tool protruding from behind
his back, the canisters for his gas mask and mess tool, and
satchels for sundry equipment such as grenades
Canadian
private, 1917.The Canadians wore the basic British
uniform.Noteworthy here are the cap-comforter, which would be
replaced by the helmet in action, and the leather jerkin, first
issued in the winter of 1914.Much else of his equipment is
standard, such as the SMLE rifle, entrenching tools and cutdown
pack containing such essentials as mess tools but no greatcoat. He
carries, like his German counterpart, satchels for extras such as
grenades, extra ammunition and the like
