The Prototype
The Enoden is a small electric railway about 10 km in length connecting Fujisawa, Enoshima and Kamakura. It makes connections with two other railways and an elevated monorail. The Enoden shares a station with JREast at Fujisawa on the Tokaido Line and another at Kamakura on the Toshogu Line. At Enoshima the Enoden connects with the Odakyu Line from the Tokyo Shinjuku Station and the Shonan Monorail running from Ofuna. The monorail provides another source of passengers originating on the Tokaido Line.
The passsengers on the Enoden are a mixture of sightseers and commuters. The sightseers are attracted by the seashore activities around Enoshima and the historical, religious and cultural locations in Kamakura. Notable among these is the famous Great Bhudda, one of the icons of Japan recognized throughout the world. Fujisawa with its station on the Japan Rail East Tokaido Shinkansen is another important source of passengers.
