Aura tarried at a bridge while looking down at the river that slowly flowed along undisturbed, and on the water was the reflection of the stars and the crescent moon. She gave a deep sigh of depression because thoughts of her blithely past ran through out her mind. She tried not to think about the wonderful times she spent with her father, for the very thought of him would cause her to remember the horrible night, when she witnessed her own father's death. Her father, Lt. Ikaika, was slain for something that he believed in; the fighting must stop if the human race was to obtain peace.
Aura leaned over the bridge with her arms supporting her weight so she wouldn't fall over the bridge. She gazed at the reflection of the moon that was eliminating from the river below. The water is calling out to me, its saying that it can take all my pain away forever, and that I won't have to deal with the word pain again. I am listening to you river, and I will obey you and except your help. Please, do what you said you would do for me. Aura then pushed herself up onto the bridge's side and held her hands out to the side. My dear family I shall be with you shortly. With her final words Aura jumped into the water that lay just below.
The passing happy-go-lucky Duo noticed that a young girl had jumped off the bridge, and Duo wasn't the type to let someone take his or her own life. Duo rushed over to the bridge to check out the distance between the bridge and the water. He found the distance to be shorter than he thought, so he to got on the side of the bridge and jumped. Duo leaned forwards and stuck out his arms over his head, by doing this he was able to dive without getting knocked out when he hit the water.
Aura had hit the water at this point, but unlike Duo she hit the water flat on, face fist. The distance that she fell was just enough to render her unconscious, and with her whole body under water the possibility of her dying within minutes was high.
Duo surfaced immediately when he hit the water so he could take a deep breath. When he took in the oxygen he needed, he then dived down to look for the girl that tried to take her own life. He searched around frantically for the girl, but nothing. Again and again he tried to look for the girl, but still he couldn't locate her. When exhaustion from going back to the surface and back down into the deeps began to take their toll, Duo had no choice but to stop his search.
That night Duo lay in his bed awake because he felt guilty for not saving that girl's life. This same thought raced through out his mind, which enabled him to sleep, even if he had wanted to. I should have searched longer for that girl, that girl died because of me. Why couldn't I save her? An hour later Duo was finally able to rest his mind of this thought, and was also able to go to sleep when he did.
Morning came all to fast for Duo because when he awakened his body felt so stiff from trying to save that girl. "I guess I'll go back to the bridge and say good-bye, she does deserve that at least from her killer." Duo's happy-go-lucky personality seemed to slip away from him, with all the pain that had built in him he couldn't help but to weep. After a few minutes of silent tears Duo got up from his bed and dressed himself up with his minister collar outfit.
When Duo reached the river that Aura had died in, he headed for the left bank. At the edge of the river Duo knelt down on his knees so that the river water would touch him in a soothing way. As Duo said his good-byes tears slowly started to fall down his cheeks. "I'm sorry that I couldn't save you, and I'm sorry that you had to die because of me. I know this may not mean anything from your killer, but I'll just say it any way. I just wanted to say good-bye, and that your soul can rest in peace for the rest of eternity."
Duo wept a few more tears before he left the girl's resting-place. Duo looked over to the right of him because someone seemed to tell him to do so. There he saw the body of a young girl with dark brown hair lying on the bank of the river. Duo's spirit revived itself with the site of the young girl that he supposedly killed. "It can't be?!" Duo said with shock and amazement.
Duo ran over to her, but in his eyes he saw only a dead body. He bent down and grabbed the girl's lifeless body; he put one hand on her back and the other on the back of her head. What should I do with this girl? I need to find her family and tell them that I found their daughter and that I killed her by accident. Duo moved his right hand, which was supporting her back, to the back of her knees so that it would be easier for him to carry her.
He walked slowly up to the bridge that they had both jumped off, but a sudden cough from Aura had caused Duo to stop. "What?" The baffled Duo gently placed Aura down on the ground to check for a pulse. A slight pulse is exactly what he found, so he again picked her up and quickly carried her to a hospital. I hope I'm not to late.
At the hospital Duo signed a few papers with a fake name, address, occupation, etc. When all the paperwork was finished they excepted Aura as a patient, and she was taken to the emergency room for intensive care. Duo had to wait in the waiting room, and the next thing he found himself doing was spending the night there.
In the morning the Doctor came in with some delightful news for Duo. "Excuse me, Sir." The Doctor tapped Duo on his left shoulder so that he would wake up. "Wha...?"
"The girl that you brought in is doing fine now. We managed to stabilize her pulse and she is breathing normally as well. She's awake and she wants to see." Duo nodded and followed the Doctor to Aura's room.
Aura had her head turned towards the window, where she stared at the clouds and the sky. When Duo and the doctor entered the room Aura turned her head over to them. "I'll be back in a minute, but Mr. Aileron please don't stay long she needs to rest."
"Sure." Duo walked over to Aura's bedside and introduced himself. In his normal happy-go-lucky way he said to Aura, "Hi, I'm Du... Um Stahn Aileron. I want to apologize for putting you through that, I would have saved you if I could have, but...."
"Why did you bring me here? Why didn't you let me die?"
"Huh?!" Duo's eyes widen at her words.
"It's not your fault that I almost died because I did it to myself so you are not to blame. I wanted to die so much, why couldn't you let it be?" Duo gulped for the words that Aura spoke made him feels as if he did something wrong. "Why did you plea for your death?" Aura turned her head back to the window, and a moment of silence fell into the room.
"My emotional pain grew to great for me to live with so...though I'm sure it's something you wouldn't understand." Duo moved closer to Aura's bed and placed his hands on the bed railing. "I'll see you tomorrow to check up on you." With that Duo headed for the door, but before he left he gave a few more words to Aura. "You may be surprised." With that Duo was out of there.
"How could he have felt what I have?"
The next day Duo had kept his word that he would return and check up on her. When he arrived at the hospital Duo was shocked to find that the doctor couldn't find any living relatives or even friends of Aura's. "We checked some names out that she gave us, but the records show that they were all killed by OZ. You're the only friend that she has at the moment, so would it be a bother if you took care of her. She has recovered enough so she now can leave the hospital." Duo looked at the doctor for a moment before saying anything.
"Yeah, I can take care of her until she's well." With that Duo left for Aura's bedroom, and when he arrived he found her staring out the window again. "You must really like to be outside or something." Startled, Aura quickly turned around and looked at Duo. "What do you want?"
"Hey, is that the way to treat the person that saved your life?" Duo said quit happily.
"Yes!" snapped Aura.
"Though if you ask me, you shouldn't long for death, because is something that is very precious. You should throw something so precious as your own life away, and I know that hard and painful feelings do come with life, but you need to overcome those feelings." Aura went to her bed to lie down, and then she looked over to Duo, who was leaning against the wall.
"Anyway, the doctor said you can leave the hospital since you seem to have recovered most of your stamina. So where will you go if you don't have any family or friends to turn to?"
"I honestly don't know because I really don't have a true home any more. When my father, Lt. Ikaika, died my heart shattered because he was the only one I had left in this world. I never really saw any point to live after that, and to top it all off, I was forced to see my father's death. And that's basically why I yearned for my death."
"I never really told this to any one, but I guess this is the perfect time to tell it. When I was about seven I stowed away on a plane to one of the L-2 colonies, and that's where I met up with other children that had been orphaned by the war. Solo, the leader of the group, and me wound up too be good friends. Unfortunately, a virus swept through the colony, but the Federation came up with a cure, and those you could afford it bought their own. Solo wound up catching the virus, and since none of the medicine was supplied for the orphanage, Solo had started to slowly die. I couldn't bear to see Solo in pain, so I slipped into the hospital that was supplying them, and stole one for Solo. When I returned with the medicine it was to late, for he had died, before I could return with the medicine. One of the boys that were with him in his final moments told me that Solo wanted me to know that he wished that we had spent more time together. I was so touched by his words because in the world no one really cared about me. That's why I named myself..." Duo's voice faded because he didn't want to give himself away.
Aura hesitated before saying anything, "Now, I see how you can relate to my feelings in a way. But a least you didn't have to witness his death as in a slaughter."
"But did he die while you were with him, or was he dead when you got to him?"
"He did in my arms, but the site of..."
"Enough of that! At least you got say your good-byes and that your father died in the arms of someone he truly cared about. For that you should be thankful, and you know that your dad loves you and he wouldn't want to see his pretty daughter acting the way you are."
"I'm afraid, that you're correct, except that it's really hard to let it go."
"Well, no one said it would be easy, all you need is time and that is what you have plenty of. So why don't you let yourself heal at any rate of your choosing."
"Ok." With that the room fell quiet as Duo and Aura stared out the window looking at the clear blue sky.
