"Peace is but a shadow of death,
Desperate to forget it's painful past…
"Though we hope for promising years
After shedding a thousand tears,
Yesterday's sorrow constantly nears.
"And while the moon shines blue,
By dawn, it will turn a scarlet hue."

Peace is but a shadow of death,
*Relena walks on stage towards a podium, and the crowd cheers wildly. When they settle down, she begins giving a speech. The crowd looks very happy with what she has to say. Zechs nods approvingly from behind stage, then joins Noin and walks away.
Only a few cities away, in a mobile suit garage, Wing Zero, Deathscythe, Heavyarms, Sandrock, and Shenlong stand in a row, witht their respective pilot in front of them.
Desperate to forget it's painful past…
*As Relena is speaking, she has a flashback of when her father died, and she stole a gun and ran out. She also remembers when she shot at Lady Une. Relena shakes her head slightly and puts her mind to other matters.
The gundam pilots are remembering their pasts too, Heero seeing a little girl and her dog, Mary, dead; Duo seeing Father Maxwell dead and Sister Helen dying; Trowa shooting the communicators Midii used; Quatre watching his father commit suicide; Wufei watching Meiran die. They each shake their head in turn and begin to walk out; first Quatre, then Trowa, then Wufei, then Heero. Duo doesn't shake his head, and he doesn't leave. Heero turns off the lights as he leaves, leaving Duo in the dark.
Though we hope for promising years
*Une walks to a window and gazes out at the sunset, noting to herself that she finally has a chance to do so and Preventer has been slow lately. She smiles at her reflection in the mirror, then gasps as she sees an image of Treize next to her with his arms around her. Une spins around to look, but there's no one there.
In Luxembourg,Germany,  a large yellow car with a New York liscence plate drives up a driveway and skids to a stop. Dorothy walks out of her car and up to the front door of the mansion. After she knocks, a still loyal member of the Treize faction opens the door and allows her in. Dorothy walks up to and greets Mariemaia Khushrenada, still in a wheelchair and living in her father's home.
As we shed a thousand tears
*Une turns back toward the window, desperate to see her desceased love, but he's not there. Heartbroken, she slumps into her desk chair and begins crying. The first thing Une sees is a mirror, which she slams face-down so she doesn't have to look at herself. It breaks.
Mariemaia and Dorothy are served tea, which they both accept. Together, the two former war-lovers speak of the things they have lost to war: parents, loved ones, innocence. As they talk, it becomes evident that the wars have aged both young people.
Yesterday's sorrow constantly nears
*Une looks up as Sally bursts into the office with news: a new rebellion has been started, and they're attacking Washington DC. Une quicks wipes away her tears, pur her glasses back on, and runs out of the office.
One of the Treize Faction members turns on the TV to a news channel, with footage of the new and sudden war. Dorothy watches and smiles, and so does Mariemaia. The younger girl orders one of the men to ready a plane, and Dorothy laughs.
Duo suddenly hears a radio with reports and the battle. Shocked, he runs and slams his fist into a red button on the wall. Red lights flash as he runs to his gundam and gets in the cockpit. Bewildered, the other pilots come in and do the same.
A man in the shadows listens to Relena's speech.
And while the moon shines blue
At Preventer Headquarters, Une, Sally, Dorothy, Mariemaia, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Wufei run towards each other and begin talking. Then Duo silences them with a comment: Where's Heero?
Too far away to stop the man in the shadows that he cannot see, but knows is there,, Heero runs past stagehands and even Zechs and Noin without noticing, only hoping to reach Relena in time.
The man steps out of the shadows and aims.
By dawn,
The group at Preventer Headquarters turn to a television set and watch helplessly as a figure, almost unnoticable, aims at the youngest Peacecraft.
Zechs yells his sister's name frantically, Noin does the same. Neither of them notice the tears streaming from their eyes.
Relena stops mid-word and her head whips around to see who called her name. Heero bursts out from the side of the stage, racing to Relena.
The man shoots.
it will turn a scarlet hue.
The bullet hits Relena in the chest just as Heero pulls her down. He watches, without any power at all, as the fourteen year old peace leader dies. Smiling, she strokes his face with a bloody hand and says,
"I love you, my other big brother. Heero. Thank you."
Her hand drops and Relena closes her eyes. Frantically, Heero calls out for a doctor.
Zechs runs to his sister, begging her to wake up.
As guards struggle to subdue the hitman, he shoots himself in the head and falls to the ground.
The group at Headquarters can watch no more. They all begin crying and turn away. All except Dorothy. She watches as the paramedics try in vain to restore Relena Peacecraft's pulse.
Dorothy whispers, "Miss Relena... you deserved a better death." And, for the first time for as long as she can remember, Dorothy Catalonia falls to her knees and begin crying.

I saw the poem and said, "Ooh… this would make a good fanfic." But, of course, it's not a happy poem, so neither is the fic. I don't particuarly like Relena, although I don't hate her too much anymore, (then again, I haven't watched Gundam Wing in a while,) so I wasn't going to have anything bad happen to her.
But the fic needed a sacrifice, and it chose Relena. Note the `it': this fanfic practically wrote itself for me.
Please tell me if you enjoyed it.
