Day 4 - 6

On the fourth day we continued our tour to Calgary. We first stopped at the 1988 Winter Olympic site including the 90 metre ski jump, bobseld and luge track. Then we had free time to explore Calgary. Calgary is a good place to shop. In contrast to B.C. Alberta has not a provincal tax, therefore the prices are about 7% lower than in Vancouver for example.

The following day we spent completely at the famous Calgary Stampede. There is a lot to see there. Outside there is a fair with lot of fair attractions and tents with live music and dance - inside the stadion is the biggest rodeo in the world. The prize money in every event (bull riding etc) is CAN$ 50,000.-. We were lucky to be there at the final days with all the final events. If you plan to go there you should definitvely try to be in Calgary at that time. After being still sore from the horse back ride from the day before I had some kind of sympathy for the cowboys.

This year's Stampede will be taken place from July 5-14 and next year's from July 4-13.

On day 6 we went from Calgary to Jasper. This is probably the most beautiful part of the whole tour. We stopped at

Lake Louise Peyto Lake
Lake Louise, Peyto Lake

and Morraine Lake

 Morraine Lake

Considering the mass of tourists at Lake Louise I definitively prefered the beauty and quietness of Morraine Lake.

Then we headed up the Icefields Parkway, which is considered as one of the world's most scenic highways. You pass waterfalls, glacial lakes, and alpine meadows, oerlooked by snow-capped peaks. There are more than 400 glaciers. We took a ride on the Athabasca Glacier with specially designed 'Snowcoachs'. On top of the glacier we had the chance to have whisky on the rocks with pure glacier ice.
