About Oamaru
New Zealand
Oamaru
New Zealand
Oamaru is on the coast of Rural North Otago in the South Island of New Zealand.
The Town is famous for it's superb Limestone buildings, Coastal wildlife, which includes Oamaru's famous, Little Blue Penguin Colony, and the coastal walks.
The Art Gallery, the Museum, the Historical Precinct (with it's fully renovated victorian hotel, the Criterion) and the Magnificent Catholic Cathedral are also worth visiting.
You can participate in Fishing in the Waitaki River or the nearby Waitaki Valley Lakes, where Jet boating, boating, sailing and water skiing are all available recreations. There is also Snow Skiing in the winter season within easy reach of Oamaru.
The town celebrates it's proud Victorian by regularly participating in full costume activities, when the visitor will find a procession of Penny Farthings Bicycles riding down the main tree lined street of town, followed by a procession of red coated military looking personnel and ladies in elegant attire, dressed from another time, yet fittingly suited to the surroundings.
