Bonders
Passing by Temptress's stall on her way back home, Vivi stopped and pulled out a small sticky-sweet treat for the black filly. Expecting it, the racehorse eagerly nuzzled at her hand until she opened it, flat-palmed. This filly was undoubtedly her favorite of all the horses, ready to do anything for a treat and not tolerating any funny stuff from anybody.
"Viv! Hey, Viv!" called her littlest brother Vitrem in his drawling accent, thirteen years of age and as active as a flitter at feeding time. She knew just how active that was, too, having a caer lizard of her own, a blue. Her parents had given her the egg on her fourteenth birthday, and the little monster had been with her ever since.
She was actually with Remmy at the moment, perched on his shoulder. Probably just looking for attention that she didn't have time to give right now.
"What is it, Remmy?" she called back, moving away from the stall and out of the barn.
He grinned as she walked over. "Maw 'n Paw says we're all goin' over t' Vegliante fer a vacation by th' beach! Kin ya imagine it, a beach! I ain't never been there b'fore."
"That's cause you were too young last time we went, little brother," she told him, grin as wide as his own. She loved the beach, though she'd only ever been there twice with her family. House Segno was surrounded by land for a ways, good for raising horses and skirr, but many of its inhabitants never saw a beach. Ridiculous on an island world, she thought.
"Yeah, but I'm not now, am I?"
"Nope, you're not," she agreed. He'd turned thirteen that spring, and was very proud of that fact, taking on more chores before their parents could ask him to. That earned him brownie points, and quite a few more privileges with their parents. He'd been hyper all that day.
Just like he was hyper now, dark blue eyes sparkling and nut-brown hair tossed about from running. He was always running, and she couldn't wait to see him swim.
He definitely took after their mother in looks, like their eldest sister Trivitha, a darker complexion and darker hair with deep sapphire eyes. She and Muvitho had their father's thick and wavy red hair, fair complexion, and freckles. Privately she would have liked their mother's eyes, but her green ones matched her hair better, and everyone told her they made her look cute. She didn't want to look cute, that was Rem's job.
"Oh yeah," he said suddenly, remembering something. "Vitho's not coming. He wants ta stay here an' keep working, thinks it'll improve his chance of bein' chosen fer jockey. Though why he'd miss the beach fer that..." The kid just shook his head.
"Well, it's all he's ever wanted to do," she said reasonably. "Any chance he gets he's gonna take. Flia, c'mon, we'd better go pack." The flitter obediently flew from his shoulder to hers. "I take it we're leaving first thing tomorrow? Riding across the island?"
"Yup, and we're goin' straight ta the Cove, not stopping off anywhere 'cept ta rest." If his grin could have split his face, it would have. "An' not only do we get ta see th' beach, we get ta see th' sea dragons!"
