USS Yorktown (CG-48), USS Arthur W. Radford (DD-968)
USS Yorktown (CG-48), USS Arthur W. Radford (DD-968)Halifax, Nova Scotia, as home to the Canadian Navy's Atlantic Fleet, sees its fair share of NATO warships during the year.  Here you will find some information and photographs of ships that have visited Halifax recently.  I have begun work on expanding this area of the site and will continue to add additional information on our recent port visitors.  I seem to always have a number of photographs to scan and will continue to add these as soon as I can.

The Summer of 1998 saw visits from NATO's Standing Naval Forces Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) and NATO's Standing Forces Channel (STANAVFORCHAN).  The STANAVFORLANT Fleet at the time consisted of FDS Bayern (the flag ship from Germany), HMCS Charlottetown (from Canada), HNoMS Narvik (from Norway), HMLNS Jacob van Heemsckerck (from the Netherlands), HMS Manchester (from the United Kingdom), USS Robert G. Bradley (from the United States), and PONS Alvares Cabral (from Portugal).  The members of STANAVFORCHAN which also visited Halifax during the summer included HNoMS Hinnoy (from Norway), HNoMS Vidar (also from Norway), BNS Bellis (from Belgium), FDS Datteln (from Germany), HNLMS Schiedam (from the Netherlands), and HMS Hurworth (from the United Kingdom). Of course numerous other visitors called in at Halifax to make 1998 an excellent year for naval enthusiasts.

So far, this summer has been relatively quite on the Halifax waterfront.  The last month has seen visits by the U.S. Navy ships USS Donald Cook (DDG-75), USS Ashland (LSD-48), USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) and USS Mitscher (DDG-57).  Haligonians were also treated to an unexpected visit by two Type 206A coastal submarines of the German Navy.  FDS U15 (S194) and FDS U25 (S174) called in at Halifax accompanied by the German Luneburg class submarine tender FDS Meersburg (A1418).  This marked the first time since World War II that German u-boats have been anywhere near Halifax.

I have now completed a new image index to provide a central repository for all the photos in this area of the site.

FDS U15 (S194), FDS U25 (S174), FDS Meersburg (A1418)I have finally been able to get a number of scans done and have updated a number of the various Nato warship pages.  Keep checking back as I will continue to have additional photos which I hope to upload as soon as I can.  If you are interested in sharing some photographs, please drop me a line at wilson9403@home.com.  I am always interested in any photographs of foreign warships, either from visits to other Canadian ports, or to ports in any other locations in the world.  I look forward to hearing from you.  If you serve in a foreign Navy, I would also be most interested in badge stickers and/or "Welcome Aboard" brochures from any foreign warships. If you have such items or serve on a ship I would like to hear from you.  Thanks to all for visiting and best wishes!!
