THE TELECARDS OF CYPRUS

The first card telephones in Cyprus were installed by the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CY.T.A) in 1987. Up until 1998 the cards used in Cyprus were of the GPT magnetic type, manufactured by GPT Card Technology Coventry, UK. The cards were primarily printed by McCorquodale Card Technology, but a few issues were also printed by DataCard. By the end of 1998, the number of telecard issues had reached 28, with a total printing of approximately 15,900,000 copies.
The first chip cards wre introduced for general circulation in December 1998, primarily in Nicosia and Limassol. CY.T.A. had made the cards  available to collectors at a phonecard exhibition staged in Larnaca in July of the same year.
Today approximately 65  different chip cards have been issued, these include both general and private issues. It is imporatnt to note that the cards will be listed by their control numbers, and not by strict series emissions.
