Popstar! Magazine Interviews *NSync

Popstar! Magazine: Your album is titled Celebrity. What in your mind makes somebody a celebrity?

JC: Well, I guess when people call you popular. Even popular kids in school are like the celebrities at their schools. It just seems to be whenever you're popular and you come across as, I guess, glamorous. We make fun of ourselves that we get to have fun and dress up like rock stars.

PM: What's your fave song on Celebrity?

Lance: There are so many...

JC: You're asking the wrong dude. I like this album.

Lance: It's so hard, because when you hear these songs, every song is like a potential single. And that sucks -- well, it doesn't really suck, but you can't really choose, you could go a totally different way. We have a different sound that no one's heard. I don't know. It's strange...every song on there is just very, very good.

Chris: I like this song called "Do Your Thing." It reminds me a lot of the a cappella stuff we did on the last album. It's more vocal. The other songs are really good, but that song is really cool.

Justin: I like all of them. "Gone" maybe, because it's just a break from what we normally do. The whole album is a break from what we normally do.

PM: What's the story behind "Gone?"

Chris: "Gone?" She's just...gone.

Justin: Yeah. She's gone, gone, gone, gone. I wrote it.

PM: How strongly do you guys scrutinize your vocals?

Joey: I've done it to the point where I've had the sound guy record my part and make sure I was singing everything right. Every time -- background vocals and everything. "Just record me and see what I did wrong and what I can do to fix it." Sometimes you're running and you're dancing and you're singing and it sounds bad. But hey, nobody's perfect.

PM: What are some of the titles that you guys thought of before
Celebrity?

JC: The minute we heard the song, we were like, "That's the name of the album."

PM: Who came up with the sketches that were shown through the PopOdyssey Tour?

Chris: Wade (Robson) came up with a lot of concepts for the show. He basically said, "Here's the outline -- how can you do this? What do you think will look good in it? What will be funny?" Wade had not been on tour yet, but we know our audience and we know how to play them.

PM: What do you guys do when you forget the songs?

Joey: There was once or twice when I literally went onstage and completely forgot what I was going to do.

JC: You introduced a song twice last night.

Joey: No, I don't think so -- you should look at the tape! We have it. But there was once or twice where I would look around and be like, "What's the first line?"

JC: There's been a couple of times where, like, literally, you just blank out and you just mumble through it.

Lance: The last show I could not talk. everything I said was, "Bleh, bleh bleh."

JC: Some of the old songs run together sometimes in my head because we've been doing them for so long. You start singing words from one of the other songs in this song and you realize you're doing it so you mumble through it. It's like the difference between "Tearing Up My Heart" and "I Want You Back." I would go in and do my verse for "I Want You Back," and then I'd be singing a couple of the "Tearing" words. Then I'd just start slurring it because I knew I was jacking up. But you definitely mumble. You feel stupid. You want to feel like you tricked everybody, but you didn't. Everybody down there knows, and you're just kind of like, "Sorry guys!"

PM: What's your favorite part of PopOdyssey?

JC: Man, I love standing in that pyramid. I like running down on that walkway too. You're right there in the middle of the whole event. When you're up on the second stage, it's cool, but you're still not at the level that you are when you're down on the middle ramp. You're shaking hands with people and you're in the middle of the crowd. You're feeling their energy. It's almost like being in the middle of a gigantic club. You feel like you're in a crowd instead of being onstage.

PM: Do the fans ever get too excited and try to pull you down?

JC: Oh, he almost got pulled down the other night. (Points to Lance) His shirt was too long!

Lance: Oh, yeah. I'm not going to try and reach out anymore. I almost got pulled in.

PM: They grabbed your shirt?

Lance: Yeah, I basically try to grab their hands by the tips so they
can't grab on to you.

Joey: If that ever happened to me, I'd just dive right in. No one's going to carry my weight -- I'd fall right to the floor.

JC: I don't care, man, put me in the mix. That's what it's all about.

PM: I have to ask -- whose idea was it for the mechanical bulls?

Joey: Wade.

Lance: I remember it surprised me, though. Y'all knew about it before me. I was like, "Wait!" And then they came and I had no clue.

JC: I knew we were going to get 'em, but then they came with all of the horns and the lit up eyes and I was like, "That's cool!!!"

PM: Do you have tour plans for the fall also?

JC: No! At first we were going to think about touring in the fall, but now we're just going to push it back because we want to promo in Europe and stuff. We keep dissin' them so hard because we've been over here so long.

Lance: It's going to be cool, because we're going to re-work the show because the album will be out and we'll know the songs we want to put into the show to downsize to arenas so it will be more intimate. It's just going to be a different show.

PM: What do you guys have coming up individually?

Justin: I mean...I don't want to say anything just yet. I don't want to say something and not have it happen. I will say that I'm definitely in talks about a lot of different projects -- music and movies, and both at the same time, being involved in the music part of certain movie projects. That stuff is really cool, you know, when you get a call from people in another business saying, "Hey, we want you to be involved in a soundtrack" or something like that. So we'll see where it goes. We're all doing stuff all the time. that's what becomes so much fun, venturing off into new things.

PM: Lance and Joey, tell us about the fire on the set of your movie On the Line.

Lance: Oh, Lord. That was the biggest...okay. Let's get the fire story straight.

Joey: Yeah, because I got there and they said we weren't going to film there.

Lance: Were you even there?

Joey: Yeah! I flew in that morning. That's why when they said, "We have to cancel today's shoot," I said, "No, but I just flew in!"

Lance: It was freezing cold and I wake up in the morning to the producer going, "Okay, we have to change the plans. Our studio caught on fire and they're evacuating everybody." But no one was there so we weren't threatened or anything. They had to move our trailers so the asbestos or whatever wouldn't kill us. The biggest thing was they just closed down the whole section and changed locations for the day. And so we had to do an outside shot in the freezing cold instead of being in the studio. So, no one was in danger.

Joey: Everyone was cool -- even the people who wrote the script. I would ask, "Hey, can I say this?" and they'd be like, "yeah, yeah...throw it in."

PM: Is it difficult filming a movie?

Lance: Yeah, but it was cool because it was so different than what we do every day. We'd go to bed at like midnight or one o'clock and then wake up at five or six. But every time I'd wake up I'd be happy and think "I can't wait to go to work every day." So it was a lot of fun.

PM: Are you going to do the whole big premiere thing?

Lance: Oh yeah. In LA and New York.

PM: You're trying to figure out who you're going to invite, right?

Lance: Well, you know, Julia Roberts and all of them are like, "Can I come? Can I come?" But you know...we don't have enough room, and they weren't in the movie, so...

PM: Do you have an official release date yet?

Lance: September 28, I think.

Joey: So hopefully people will go out and see it again and again so we don't look like idiots. (laughs).
