Its not all Ghosts you know???

We last went to Wiltshire last August and had a great Bank Holiday weekend. Conducted a night vigil but I'm afraid with nothing to report - for 2003 we have new Night Sight equipment and portable remote monitors to use in the fields.

Its hard going taking pics, well you should have seen the walk to get here???

Wiltshire - more than just Crop Circles

This gives you an idea of where we stay and visit

We have been traveling to Wiltshire since 1996 and I admit I think that the majority of Crop Circles are man made, but even those are remarkable works of Art, especially when you think of the constraints and conditions the individuals must work under, but saying that we do not condone the damage of Crops and the effects on the Farmers who work so hard to keep them. We always strive to ask permission to enter a formation on private land, even though sometimes its hard to find the farm that is responsible.

We always Camp at the Barge Inn at Alton Barnes, this as some of you may know is the Croppies Central point, it is a very nice Public House set next to the Kennet and Avon Canal. The amenities are basic but good, it has a converted Barn for a Toilet and Shower block, but get up early or sleep late to use them to save waiting. The fields can get rather water logged but as a rule we have always enjoyed decent weather. The cost of camping is very cheap and you get some great characters who stay there all the summer.

If you don't feel like roughing it why not stay at the Red Lion which is at Avebury, its the only pub to be built in a Stone Circle and is haunted to boot???

Red Lion Public House.

Avebury is always on the agenda for the visit, not only has the pub an excellent menu but the Stones are always worth a treck around and usually the hill opposite gets a crop circle ( these are more than probably a hoax due to their nature (such as a Greys Head - and not too well done at that)

The standing Stones.

We usually travel down on the Saturday morning and its a pleasant trip with plenty to see and set up camp as soon as we arrive at the Barge Inn.

Sorry Rick but its the only one I have????

Then its in the Pub for Lunch, maybe sitting buy the Canal if its a nice day, the meals are cheap and the ale is good, remember no Drinking and Driving. Also the pub has a Croppies Room at the back that lets you know where all the latest Crop Formations are at.

The ceiling is a site to behold, and you thought crop circles were a work of art???

As I have stated they may be mostly hoaxed but they can be enormous and expertly done , some may have another cause but that is for later - here are a few we have been to in the past.

The edges can be very precise.

This is a pole shot to gauge the size.

This is me enjoying the summer weather, I apologize for the shorts and legs but it gets very hot in the fields, but remember to pack water proofs just in case!!!!

On the Saturday night we usually hold a Sky Watch at a local vantage point, these locations are kept secret until the day as we are looking for hoaxers as much as we are looking for UFO's, if its clear we will take a telescope for all you amateur astronomers. The area that you can see is enormous.

This is at the top of Knapp Hill, remember it gets very windy.

The sky watch lasts as long as we agree on the night and then its back to the tents for a night cap and a decent sleep, Sunday is taken up by Sight Seeing. Marlborough is a lovely place to visit and do a bit of shopping.

Marlborough main High Street.

Then we can have a treck to Silbury Hill, the largest man made Earth Mound in Europe, it is private property but we have seen people going up to the top???

For all you amateur archeologists West Kennet Barrow is worth a trip, it is an ancient burial mound that has been excavated.

The entrance to a grave????

Shaun looking for Ghosts???

The team of 98' at the Barrow.

We can go to Stonehenge if we have time, that is decided on the day but there are plenty of places to visit including a few crop circles that we fall on during the day.Avebury has an excellent museum and has loads to see and do within a short walking distance, plus this is the stop off for Sunday lunch and a pint.

Sunday night is usually spent in the Barge Inn discussing past events and checking the data collected, over a few Summer Ales, I can vouch for these as they are purely medicinal and help you to sleep???

As we have said, most crop circles are man made but some of them may still be caused by another agent?? what that is no one knows for sure, I personally don't think UFO's have any part to play as any that have been spotted arrive after the crop circle has formed and have actually buzzed people hoaxing circles in the past. A few years back a commercial pilot flew over Stonehenge and saw nothing but on his return leg an hour later he reported an amazing structure of an enormous size, this had occurred in the middle of the day right next to a busy road?? it would take an army of hoaxers hours to produce.
Sometimes a strange mist is seen hanging over a field, which isn't affected by any breezes that are present and then a few days later, hey presto a crop circle appears - we have filmed one of these and it just stood erect at right angles to the crop and hung there for over an hour??? It may be the case that these some how instruct the crop on what and when to produce their patterns - seems weird but who knows.
Also it seems that microwaves may be used to produce the effect, as the nodes on the crop sometimes are seen to have ruptured do to heat and these make the crop bend over, try putting a blade of crop in a microwave oven to see the effect.
Also many smaller circles can appear around the main formation that would seem impossible  to get to ( I'm sure Doug & Dave never took a pole vault with them??)

Grape Shot.

Also why do Military vehicles take such an interest in the phenomena, but maybe they are doing the same as us, but without the visits to the pub? But its strange that they never admit to taking any interest even though you see them regularly flying past in Helicopters and Hercules Transporters.

An Army Gazelle Helicopter buzzing a Crop Circle.

We usually have a last few crop visits on the Monday and either stay a further night and do a Watch or leave it free for people to do their own thing and then you can return on the Monday or Tuesday depending on your commitments. Its a great weekend away and you get plenty of exercise. Remember to take the following:

Tent
Sleeping bags etc.
Good torch
Camera
Binoculars if you have them
Video camera as well
Water proofs.
Spending money
If you have legs like mine leave them at home????
