Nicholas Jacob and Mary Gilman
Emigrant Ancestors

Nicholas Jacob, son of Richard and Winefrede Chamber Jacob,  was born about in 1597 in Hingham, Norfolk, England. He was baptized on September 29, of that year. In 1629, when Nicholas was 32, he married  Mary Gilman, 26, daughter of  Edward Gilman & Mary Hawes Gilman also  of HIngham England.  

Nicholas, his wife Mary, son John and daughter Mary arrived in Boston  on June 15, 1633 on the ship Elizabeth Bonaventure from Yarmouth, England. The family went first to Watertown, MA.

Nicholas, immigrant  ancestor of the Jacobs, was one of the very few early planters who came to Bare Cove, now Hingham, MA, prior to the arrival of
Rev. Peter Hobart and his company in 1636.

According to the Cushing manuscript, "Nicolas Jacob with his wife and two children and their cosen Thomas Lincoln, weaver, came from Old Hingham (England) and settled in this Hingham, 1633."

In September, 1635, he had a grant of a house lot at Hingham. He lived at Watertown for a short time before that, however, and owned a homestead which he sold before 1636. In June, 1636, he had granted to him six acres of planting ground upon Weariall Hill, and June 4, 1636, the first of the great lots next to the Weymouth river and a lot of six acres "at the head of the plain next to Edward Gilman, his brother-in-law."

He was admitted as a freeman in 1635-36; was selectman in 1636; one of the committee of nine to divide Conuhasset in 1640; deputy to the General Court in 1648-49; one of the three commissioners to be presented to the General Court in 1656. He was honored with various other trusts by his townsmen.  He was an innkeeper and  kept an ordinary in Hingham in 1640. Nicholas  was a representative to the General Court in 1648 and 1649.

Nicholas died in Hingham, MA on 5 Jun 1657; he was 60. Mary died in Hingham, MA on 15 Jun 1681; she was 76.

On 25 Feb 1653 when Sarah was 17, she married Matthew Cushing,
son of  Matthew Cushing(1588-30 Sep 1660) & Nazareth Pitcher
 (ca 1586-5 Jan 1682), in Hingham, MA.
 Born ca 1623 in England.He  was baptized on 5 Apr 1623.
 Matthew died on 9 Jan 1701; he was 78.
 Occupation: wheelwright

Matthew took an active and prominent part in the affairs of the town;
selectman 13 times between 1661 and 1695, freeman 1679, and
 was known as "Sergenant," "Cornet," and later as "Lieutenant."
 He resided at Hingham Center, over the river
Having no children, he took his namesake, Mathhew Cushing,
 son of his brother John, to live with him, and in his will, dated
 28 Dec 1700, after making provision for his wife, he left his estate
 to his nephew Matthew, who succeeded to his occupation of
 wheelwright and to his home at Hingham Centre.
