Emigrant Ancestor
Thomas Thaxter, the first of the name in New England, was granted a house lot in Hingham, MA in the year 1638. The lot was located near the "training field" at Hingham Centre. Thomas later purchased the house of Captain John Mason, who had removed to Windsor, Connecticut. This same house had been built and first owned and occupied by Rev. Mr. Robert Peck, the brother of Joseph Peck, another ancestor. Rev. Peck returned to England after a few years in the colony.
The deed of sale given to Thomas was acknowledged before Mr. Endicott on June 6, 1647. This home was located on Bachelor [Main St.] and it remained in the Thaxter family for more than two hundred years.
In 1649, Thomas purchased several more parcels of land at Broad Cove, near Weymouth River. In 1652, he bought the dwelling house and land where his son John resided for many years. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth resided on Main Street near the Meeting house of the First Parish Church.
Thomas was a linen weaver. He married Elizabeth in England. They emigrated to New England in 1638 with their four children, John, 12, Elizabeth, 9, Sarah, 3 and little Daniel who was one.
Thomas was made a freeman of Hingham on May 18, 1642. He served as a church deacon. He died on February 4, 1653/54 in Hingham. The inventory of his estate was taken on February 20, 1653 by Joshua Hubbard and Matt Hawke. His estate was valued at £ 213.18.04, as deposed by his wife Elizabeth. Joseph Hubbard, Matt Hawke and John Leavitt signed the deposition. It was recorded on May 7, 1654. In Book Two, Suffolk Records, page 15, is a petition to the Court, for a Division of the Estate of Thomas Thaxter of Hingham, who died intestate, leaving an Estate to the value of about £230. His widow was to have one third part, his eldest son a double "porcon", the other three children "equall shares".
At this time only four of the couple's seven children were living. The eldest son John was to pay out of his share £14 to his brother Samuel and his sister Sarah was to have £2. Elizabeth, his widow was to have 40 shilling by "the yeare, payd to hir during the time of hir widdowhood."
Signed on April 20, 1654 by Elizabeth with an X as her mark and his son John and others.
Later a small debt of £2.17 was found to be outstanding. The Court ordered John to pay it.
Elizabeth married for a second time on September 29, 1654. Her second husband was William Ripley, a widower. She survived him, and then married John Dwight of Dedham on January 28, 1657/58. Elizabeth died on July 17, 1660.

John Thaxter
Emigrant Ancestor
John emigrated to Hingham, MA with his family at the age of twelve. He was born in England in 1626.
He married Elizabeth Jacob, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Jacob on December 4, 1648 in Hingham,MA. Elizabeth was born in England in 1632. John was 22 and Elizabeth was 16 when they married.
John was chosen a Lieutenant in the Milita in 1664, and he later held the rank of Captain. He served in the campaign against the Dutch in New York, and was "preferred for" promotion by orders from Cromwell. In 1680, he was in command of a troop of cavalry.
He served the colony in many capacities. Between the years 1662-1685 he served as Selectman. He was a Representative to the General Court in 1666 and later.
John and Elizabeth resided on North Street where Saint Paul's Catholic Church now stands.
They had twelve children all born in Hingham:

Sarah Thaxter
Sarah was born on September 26, 1671. She was raised in the town of Hingham, MA. On October 1, 1691, she married Nathaniel Holmes in Boston, Suffolk County, MA. Their daughter Lydia, married Rev. Thomas Greenwood.
