Generation One
Henry Butterworth
Henry Butterworth, born about 1575, was the father of John Butterworth. Henry came first to Weymouth, MA in 1628. He later moved to Charleston, MA about the year 1631.
He and his wife Mary, emigrated from Yorkshire, England with their three grown children, Samuel, John and Mary. Samuel and Mary were in their early twenties and single, John was thirty, and came with his wife Mary,and their two children, Mary and John, Jr. Henry's daughter Mary married Thomas Clifton about 1641. Samuel never married.
Henry died in the Weymouth area between 1635 and 1645. The inventory of his estate was taken by Edward Bates, Richard Adams and William Carpenter. In his will mention was made of woolen and linen items "the children have worne out".
Henry's widow was granted a lot on the east side of "Fresh Pond" on February 26, 1651.
Generation Two
John Butterworth
John Butterworth, born on December 23, 1599 in England was the son of Henry Butterworth. It is thought they came from Yorkshire, England.John married Mary Lanbotham, in England about 1621. John and Mary emigrated to Weymouth, Massachusetts about 1629. John and Mary were then about 29 years of age. Their two little children were four year old John and Mary an infant. They and other members of their family, moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1631.
By 1635, they returned to Weymouth. Another daughter, Sarah was born to them in 1641, and also a son Abraham.
John and his brother Samuel joined the group heading for the new settlement at Rehoboth, MA in 1644. They were still on the Rehoboth records in 1657. By 1667, they had moved on to Swansea, MA. John's son John Butterworth was a founding member of the First Baptist Church in Swansea established by Rev. Myles.
John died in Swansea on September 15, 1676. .
Generation Three
Mary Butterworth
Mary Butterworth was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England about 1628. She was the daughter of John Butterworth and Mary Lanbotham. Mary emigrated to New England with her parents as an infant about 1628.
Mary married Sampson Mason on March 9, 1651 in Dorchester, MA.
They were the parents of thirteen children.
She died in Rehoboth, Massachusetts on August 29, 1714.
