Greenwood Lineage
In West Riding, Yorkshire, England there is a small milltown located at the bottom of a narrow valley. The community of weavers from which it began was located at Heptonstall on the shoulder of the moor above. The two are still connected by a steep pack horse way.
Ancient English records were in the keeping of James Greenwood of York in 1715, and in later years in the possession of Joseph Greenwood Clayton, of New Laithes, York, England in 1816. The first part is written upon parchment and shows a direct line from Wyomarus, cater to Maud the Empress, who established a home in the forest of Hemptonstall, in England, overlooking the beautiful Hebden Valley in 1154. Wyromarus de Greenwode was the progenitor of the Greenwood family. A copy of these records may be found in the College of Arms, London, England, and with these records is a drawing of the arms of Wyomarus.
There are many reasons why a coat of arms was bestowed upon a particular person. The right to bear arms was reserved for freemen, the nobility, the gentry and certain officers. This privilege testified to the rank of the arms holder, and to his character as well. No dishonorable family was ever permitted to bear arms.
The arms of Wyromarus depict three silver St. Andrew's crosses. The crosses are appear on a dark shield, and are separated by a silver band which depict two rafters of a house. This band is known as a chevron. The crosses have always been used to show an interest in religious matters. The arms of Wyomarus and his family are dated 1154.
