KAPiCA/02 Video
Pre-Order Survey
by David Hunt

September 22, 2003
Background Information

I am hoping to have the KAPiCA/02 8 video set available by the first of October 2003.

This Survey is to get an idea about how many KAPers are interested in purchasing the KAPiCA/02 Video. Whether you are interested in DVD or VHS. If you want the complete conference on 8 tapes/disks or the highlights only version on 1 tape/disk. If you use NTSC, PAL, or SECAM. (If you are not sure go to this LINK for a list of countries and their video standards)

The one tape "Highlights Only" version will not have any material that is not already on the longer version. There is no need to buy both versions to make sure you see everything.

It is my understanding that those countries that use SECAM will be able to play PAL versions of DVDs on their equipment. I have been lead to believe that anyone can play NTSC versions of the DVDs on computer based DVD drives and view them on the computer monitor. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Why A Survey?

The KAP community is small and thus there is a very limited market for this video. To get the cost of the DVD sets down to $50 dollars I must have copies made in groups of 50 at a minimum. My speculative costs for making copies of the DVDs ahead of sales runs into thousands of dollars. I have purposely kept the profits to a minimum as a favor to the KAP community. I'll feel lucky if I recoup my production costs.

The cost of commercial duplication of the VHS tapes is actually more than the DVDs, therefore I will only make copies of the VHS tapes on demand with my equipment and VHS tapes will be available in NTSC only. This will mean those of you who order VHS tape sets will have a minimum delay of a week before your order is actually shipped.

I anticipate the "Highlights Only" version of both DVDs and VHS tapes to be produced on a "on demand" basis like the VHS 8 tape sets. The "Highlights Only" version will not be available until later this year.

In summary:
  • Cost $50 US for 8 Disk Set plus postage (VHS or DVD).
  • Cost $25 US for 1 Disk Highlights Version plus postage (VHS or DVD).
  • Highlights Version will not be available until later this year.
  • The first release will be NTSC version only (USA, Canada, and Japan).
  • PAL version on DVD ONLY!!! (Pending Tests). NO TAPES with PAL !!!
  • SECAM users should be able to use PAL DVDs
  • Everyone should be able to play NTSC DVDs on a computer DVD drive
  • There will be NO COUNTRY CODE on the DVDs
