After many years of thinking I'd never have a baby...and pretty much resigning myself to that fact, one day at work I was feeling VERY ill! My best friend at work, and someone who
also had had trouble conceiving with his wife, told me I was either incredibly stressed out or pregnant. We laughed since we both KNEW it couldn't be the latter!
On 19 January 1993, after a 16 hour labour and a 3 hour push-until-your-eyeballs-fall-out session, my son Evan, was born, weighing in at 7 pounds, 3 ounces and 21 inches in length!
Once I looked at him, I felt like I had known him forever. The fact that he looked just like me didn't hurt! (BIG SMILE)
His infancy was pretty action packed since Ev was a failure-to-thrive baby. I breastfed him until he was six months old - by then they thought he had cystic fibrosis, so I switched
to formula in a vain attempt to bulk him up. He didn't double his birthweight until he was well past a year old!
Around the age of 11 months, I called for help. He just wasn't babbling like I had seen other babies do....he was alert and cute and cuddly, but soundproof!
He has been in Early Intervention ever since. We have done speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, vision therapy and developmental therapy - ALL I might add, with GREAT SUCCESS!
At 14 months, he was given glasses....what a cute little baby! I cannot count how many people have stopped and asked us how a child so young could be tested and fitted for glasses but its true! And he never fights them, he never takes them off....
they have improved his vision so dramatically that he really doesn't question why he has to wear them at all!
Now he is nearly 5 and he is in pre-kindergarten and headed for kindergarten in the fall! He plays soccer on a city league! He still has speech therapy three times a week, as well as occupational therapy (including sensory integration therapy) once a week and physical therapy twice a month. He is a little behind
what the others in his class can do. He goes to a GREAT daycare (Kindercare) and I credit them with making sure he is accepted for who
and what he is....not one child there thinks Evan is different in any way!
He loves trains, hockey, football, golf (has his own clubs in fact!), and his pool! His favourite movies are "Yours, Mine and Ours" and "Hook" and he just saw and loved "Kindergarten Cop" and now runs around
saying "we NEVER talk to strangers!".
He is a serious Rugrat fan and also likes the old Batman show!
Just this past summer he was diagnosed with a speech disorder known as Apraxia.
My son is MY dream come true. There is nothing I wouldn't do to make HIS dreams a reality! He is everything I ever dreamed of and someone I could never live without!
