First I would like to explain the formal and traditional training of people as Uchi Deshi (live in student) really died with O'Sensei. True Uchi Deshi training is very hard to come by. For the purists out there, I would translate my training literally to have been Soto Deshi training or outside student, in the literal sense. But in terms of my duties, what I learned and how I was treated and trained by Jones Sensei and others in my dojo community, I was an Inner Disciple; the other reading of Uchi Deshi. So for my dojo's purposes and mine, I was referred to and considered an Uchi Deshi of Rocky Mountain Ki Society for 3 and 1/2 years. During this time I was responsible for some general dojo administration (collecting dues, taking attendance, cleaning, visitor contact, mailings, seminar coordination, arranging special practice sessions, etc.), practice (approximately 35 hours per week) and instruction (both children and adults). For the first year I was basically on my own. One other Deshi came and went and then I was joined by Derek Nabel and Tony Martinez in year 2. Tony didn't make it and disappeared. Derek, however, stuck it out with me and on Jones Sensei's departure for Brazil with his wife Lael Keen Sensei, we were both forced to end our Uchi Deshi training. The training has ended, however, as it is often said "once Uchi Deshi, always Uchi Deshi." I am very grateful to Jones Sensei for all of his time and dedication to training me and I am very grateful to Derek San for all he went through with me and for the lasting bond of friendship we now have.
If you are seriously interested in Uchi Deshi training (RMKS no longer offers this training since Jones Sensei left) you may e-mail me at the address on the Yuma Ki Aikido home page. I know of several good programs that you might be interested in, however, this type of training is not something to be taken lightly. It is a big commitment for the Sensei, the Student and the Dojo community as a whole. You will most likely have to go to the dojo in which you are interested, practice for a while and see what kind of dynamic is created between you and the Sensei and then see if this type of training is available.
