Promaucaes vs Amalgro on the Rio Claro 1537

by George Smithson

Accompanied by the puppet Inca Paullu, Amalgro with 570 Spaniards and 15000 Inca auxillaries marched through Bolivia collecting tribute and then crossed the Andes in winter. Getting caught in deep snow 180 Spaniards and 10000 Inca died of the cold. Pushing ahead Amalgro brought back help from the Inca governor of Cociapo province. With the "Inca" Paullu in tow they were well recieved and gathered up tribute gold in the Inca provinces of northen Chile. Reinforcments of Spaniards turned up to join Amalgro and Paullu was able to draw from local garrisons and Mapuche militia to replentish some of his losses.

Dispite the warnings of Paullu and the local leaders Amalgo crossed the Rapel River, the southern border of the Inca Empire, into Promaucae territory. Having seen no effective resistance from any indians up to this time he and his Spanish soldiers were contemptuous of their powers of resistance. The new weapons, armor and horses of the Spaniards surprised the tribe but they soon recovered and confronted Amalgo at the Rio Claro.

Dispising the Promaucae, Amalgro put the Inca troops in the first line but found himself in the frontline when the Inca and Mapuche auxillaries were broken. The bloody combat lasted til night fell and the battered Spanish camped on the feild. The Promauacae camped nearby intending to resume fighting the next day. Declaring themselves the winners the Spanish decided to retire to the north and attempt the more promising project of seizing control of Cuzco from Pizarro's brother. Amalgo's pludering, rapine and enslavement of the local Mapuche on the return march to Peru caused them to revolt from the Inca/Spanish empire.

The Promaucae later became auxillaries of the Spanish colonists in their wars with the Araucanians to the south.
