HOLE'S BIOGRAPHY
Celebrity Skin (DGC Records), the third album from Hole, will make its debut Sept. 8. Named one of the "most anticipated records of 1998" by Alternative Press (January 1998), itÕs the follow-up to 1994Õs platinum Live Through This. That disc was deemed "Album of the Year" by Rolling Stone, Spin and the prestigious Village Voice critics poll.
Whereas Live Through This took a step forward in terms of craft from the bandÕs debut album, Pretty on the Inside, Celebrity Skin makes a leap. HoleÕs songs continue to mine a vein of cynicism and irony, but they are now leavened by more optimistic ideals.
Celebrity Skin is also more diverse than its predecessors, with quiet, contemplative ballads taking their place alongside the customarily aggressive rock outings. Acoustic guitar and strings bring new textures to the bandÕs sonic palette. Sharing the credit for these advances is producer Michael Beinhorn, who oversaw SoundgardenÕs Superunknown, Soul AsylumÕs Grave DancerÕs Union and The Red Hot Chili PeppersÕ MotherÕs Milk.
Hole was formed by Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson in Los Angeles in late 1989. In the early Ô90s, the band moved their base of operations to Seattle. Their return to Los Angeles is reflected in the themes woven throughout Celebrity Skin, recorded at L.A.Õs Conway Studios, as well as in its look: The packaging features images of the Malibu fires and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. In making the city their muse, Hole uphold a tradition established by The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, JaneÕs Addiction and X.
Appropriately, the band will mount their first live performance of material from Celebrity Skin in Los Angeles, playing the song "Celebrity Skin" (the first radio track from the record) at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 10.
