| Mike Stewarts' Pro Bodyboarding video game has been
released in Australia on PC. It's supposed to be coming out on Playstation
soon aswell. You can get it in most video game/computer stores.
Once you've got it, you'll need to download a patch that stops it
from crashing here (original Australian release only): Mind
Mechanics. It should be coming out in the rest of the world
in the next few months, check the site Pro
Bodyboarding. *Update* A new version of Pro Bodyboarding has
been released internationally, check the site
to see if it's available in your country. |

In the game, you can surf in contest mode, arcade mode or 2pvs
arcade mode, there is also a practice mode where you can practice
on an endless 2 minute wave of your choice. Contest mode is just
like a real contest with real rules and scoring. You have to paddle
for waves and you can dropin on people and be dropped in on. In
arcade mode you have to dodge obstacles like jetties, rocks, breakwalls
and light buoys while scoring points for moves at the same time.
You can surf breaks like Kirra, Shark Island, Pipeline, Tahiti
and Sunset Beach. There are different bodyboarders and different
boards to choose from. You can ride prone or dropknee (Mike Stewart
doesn't dropknee in this game).
Tip: If you want to dropknee, hold down the spin and tilt button
at the same time as you take off on the wave.
If anybody knows any other good tips for this game, please share
them here for everyone to use by emailing me.
There is a free technology demo which you can download from the
website, it's not
exactly the same as the full game but it gives you an idea of
what it's like, and it's also fun!

Tips for Pulling Some Basic Moves:
These tips should be useful if you are just getting started
in bodyboarding.

**DUCKDIVING**
Eppo's tip:
When a wave is going to break on your head, the best place to
be is right underneath it. By being able to dive deep, you can
escape a pounding if you can get under the whitewater explosion.
The key to duckdiving is balance. As a wave approaches, place
one knee in the middle of your board. At the same time use both
hands to grab your mils just down from the nose. In a smooth,
flowing action, push the nose of your board underneath the surface.
To get maximum depth, push down with your knee and at the same
time stmighten your free leg and hold it in the air as you begin
to penetmte the surface. The idea of holding your leg out stmight
is that, as you go under the wave, the whitewater pushes down
on it and helps guide you forward. You should by then be using
both arms to pull the nose of your board back towards the surface.
Once you have cleared all the turbulence, resurface and return
to your paddling position to continue on your way. The duckdive
is the fastest and most logical way to get through whitewater.

**BOTTOM TURNS**
Eppo's tip:
There are several different techniques to this manoeuvre. The
most popular is as follows. Ride on the tail of your board and
drive your hip into the inside edge closest to the wave's face.
When trimming to the left, lean on the left side. When going right,
drive your hip into the right corner of your board. With speed,
lean into your turn and think about where you want this line to
take you. Using your arms to help steer the board, pull up on
your outside edge with controlled power. Don't lean too much into
the wave as It may cause you to lose speed and balance. The bottom
turn Is an essential move to master and one of the first you should
learn. A good bottom turn sets up your position for the rest of
the wave.

**THE CUTBACK**
Eppo's Tip:
With momentum from your bottom turn, the next manoeuvre you should
try to master is the cutback. With speed from your bottom turn,
focus on the spot where you want to begin your carve. A cutback
is best performed on the shoulder of the wave and Is useful in
getting back to the wave's power source. Once in position, slide
your hands to the front of the board and hold your nose. Drive
your hip into the inside back corner of your board. This will
help keep you from losing your edge while turning on the wave's
face. As a means of keeping the cutback flowing I keep my legs
just touching the surface of the water to prevent bouncing out.
When the cutback is 90 per cent complete, begin to rcentre your
weight and look in the direction you now want to head. Another
method of doing the cutback keeping your hands on the rails rather
than shifting them up the rails.

**SPINS**
Eppo's Tip:
There are many variations on this move, but as far as beginners
are concerned the handdrag spinner is the one to master first.
Try catching a bit of whitewash and, as the wave picks you up
and carries you along, build up speed. Once you have enough momentum
to get out in front of the whitewater, stick your hand in the
wave close to your inside rail. Now push forward in a circular
direction and at the same time lift your legs. Slide your bodyweight
into the centre of your board or you'll lose your balance and
fall off. Keep your hand still in the wave until you have completed
half the rotation then return it to your rail. Always look in
the direction you are turning and once you have gone full circle
re-gather your trim position and ride on. The key to pulling off
the spinner is having enough speed to begin with. The more speed
you have the easier it is to spin.
STEP BY STEP
1. Focus on the spot where you want to commence your rotation
2. Begin the spin by releasing your rail and slide forward on
your board.
3. Keep your board flat to surface while lifting and bending your
legs.
4. Once you have completed a full circle, slide back into position.
5. Ride on to the next wave section.

**MAKING BARELLS**
Eppo's Tip:
Many bodyboarders think that once you get inside a tube you stay
in the same body position throughout With a fast wave like Kirra
you have to draw a speed line. Bottom turn up into the section
it's going to barrel and hold your edge. As the lip throws, build
your momentum by driving your board up and down inside the tube.
This will increase your speed as well as the odds of making it
out. Keep your eyes fixed on the tube opening at all times and
work your board towards the daylight. In some deep barrels you
often encounter what's known as the shockwave. The shocky is the
whitewater explosion created by the lip as it hits the wave's
surface and causes whitewater to form inside the tube as well
as outside. It's possible to ride the shockwave, which can give
you the added speed you might need to make it out of an extremely
deep tube. Tube riding is all about experience as no two tubes
are ever the same. The more tubes you ride, the more you will
develop your skill for making them.
STEP BY STEP
1. It's sometimes necessary to stall to set up the tube. This
can be achieved by pulling up on the nose of your board.
2. Dragging your flippers can get you the same result.
3. Timing your bottom turn correctly will set you up for the tube.
4. Once inside, try to keep your eyes open at all times.
5. To gain speed inside a tube, arch your back and slide your
bodyweight forward towards the nose.

**THE EL ROLLO**
Eppo's Tip:
When learning to do the el rollo, try not to roll too far into
the flats. The best time to attempt this move is when you're in
the tube or pocket of the wave. Aim for the lip of the wave and
let the lip throw you over. Don't force the roll, just flow with
the wave. Once you get past vertical, the throwing lip should
do the majority of the work. If you're having troubles when landing
and are losing your speed, you're not hitting the lip at the right
spot. You need to come back at least 2ft further inside on the
face. The more vertical the face of the wave, the easier it is
to roll.
STEP BY STEP
1. Know which section of the wave you want to hit.
2. Power off the bottom of the wave and hit the lip.
3. Begin your roll by letting the lip motion do most of the work.
4. As you begin to drop, look for a good place to land. Don't
go too far out into the flats.
5. Once you land flat on your board, recentre your weight and
try to get back onto the wave's face.
