The Mitta Mitta River

The Mitta Mitta river is perhaps Victoria's best tubing river. It flows South off the slopes of Mt. Bogong, (where it is shown on most maps as Big River), to Glen Valley on the Omeo highway, and follows the highway most of the way to Omeo. Just north of Omeo, the river swings to the north and flows into the Dartmouth dam. From here as a much reduced human controlled flow it continues on to flow through the town of Mitta Mitta into the Hume weir near Tallangatta. So far I have done this river 3 times, and all three times they have been the section between the Bundara river bridge (just above Anglers Rest) to Hinnomunjie bridge (north of Omeo). This section is perhaps my favourite section of any river so far as it is only a 6 hour trip with continuous grade 4-5 rapids which when there's 90cm+ of water (measured at Hinnomunjie) in there doesn't leave many places where paddling is nessesairy. The first time, on the 23rd of October 1999 myself, Big Al, The Duncaphonic and The Troy Wonder did the trip. We were ridding 2 large tactor tubes and 1 scrapper tube, so we had room to take luggage to camp on the side of the river. There were two main reasons we did this. Firstly was the fact that we were unsure of the total time it would take us to tube the river at a height of 95cm, secondly it took us a hell of a long time to get up there so we didn't get into the water till late (4:30pm). But in the end we worked it out to have taken us 5 and a half hours. Look at the pictures for more info.

The second and third time we did the river we knew what to expect and drove up on friday the 7th of January 2000 to stay the night at Anglers Rest (which has numerous camping spots, and barbeque plates to use free). The first day there was 85cm of water in the river while on the second there was 90cm. Aside from myself there was 5 other worthy adventurers on the first day, The Duncaphonic, The Troy Wonder, The Big O, Dez and Old Man River. While on the second day Dez had to leave.
