Wind Power
Pictures of a small Darieus type VAWT
The beginning:
Well to start with here I am over in the very very Northeast corner of Ohio(USA) in a town called Conneaut( that's pronounced Con Knee Ah Tuh) .About a mile an a half south of Lake Erie and about a half mile west of the state line.
I was wondering how a darieus type wind machine works. I read questions and answers on the discussion board on www.Otherpower.com when I stumble on to a website by someone named Sean , http://homepage.ntlworld.com/s.amesbury/homepage.htm over in UK somewhere. He has an article about how he built a small cardboard model of a Darieus type VAWT. Since it seems to work pretty good it inspired me to build one just a little bit more permanent than cardboard. With an excellent template sent over.
(Thanks Guys!)
I started tracing them out....
onto foamboard...then cutting them out with the sabresaw (slow speed left ragged edges....so max
speed worked better in this case....
.
Holding a bunch together and making them all uniform shape...again max speed gave best results ( nails are pretty close to the sanding belt tho....)always be extremely careful.
A little bit of glue to stick on the bottom edge of the rib...stick it on the flat piece...some glue from a glue gun.......
then some left over strips from a vinl mini-blind for the leading edge ...almost finished now to paint a couple ofcloth strips with just some latex enamel for the top skin, if this works I might use fiberglas resin on cloth or even fiberglas resin on fiberglas cloth for the next ones, got some nice white fiberglas drapes would probably work!
should have took my time on the cloth...I see that I should have actually ironed the cloth first, then sprayed it with clear enamel, then a couple of coats of the colored enamel. I think I'll do that anyway ...but for now .....
We've hit a snag on the top part of the airfoil so back to the drawing board....not working out as planned so going to make some refinements....
Back on track
...Cut back to bottom plus ribs, now on to the top skin. I was thinking might as well go all the way with the foam board. The next set I make I'll start with the top part first and glue the ribs to it first the flat bottom will be easier to glue with just a couple of spots of glue.
Those lines are cuts that I made thru the top cardboard only then cracking the foam, makes it so it'll wrap around the leading edge of the ribs...looks kinda like a the roll-top of a roll down desk, doesn't it?
Now for the other one...put them together and then we wait for some wind!
(Finished the first blade last night...got up early this morning, anxious to get the other blade done....finished ! ) Another cup a coffee and then to mount the whole works on top of a bicycle wheel.
Bicycle wheels have excellent bearings for a VAWT in this size range. You can find them all over on junk bicycles that kids have outgrown(20" wheels are quite common). the tire makes a good friction drive to spin small pm motors.
To be continued
There have been some slight modifications.....I've made the end ribs of wood so they can be fastened to the top and bottom plates more securely also they are longer 30", the length of the foam board....white duct tape is used to cover the slots...then the whole thing is sprayed with a clear lacquer to waterproof it....
