Once, long, long, long ago, there was a book entitled ‘The Universe of the Four Gods’. It was not simply a piece of literature, but a spell, which bound the reader of the book into the story, making them a part of the tale.
Such an occurrence chanced when a young girl named MiyakaYuuki and her best friend Yui Hongo read the book. Miyaka, a tender young woman of fifteen was pulled into the story and thrust into the position of the priestess of one of the four beast gods that ruled over the universe. She was dubbed Suzaku no Miko. Suzaku was the guardian beast of the South, of the kingdom of Konan.
Yuy found an opposite fate, becoming the priestess of the North, of the beast god Seriyuu.
Though Miyaka’s journeys through the story she came to know seven special people, her guardians and Suzaku’s chosen seven. Each was named after a constellation, the guardians of the four Gods. They were Hotohori, Tamahome, Chichiri, Chiriko, Nuriko, Tasuki, and Mitsukake.
Hotohori, was the ruler of the Southern kingdom of Konan. A wise, -beautiful- and gentle ruler he caught the love and admiration of those around him easily, even though he was known eagerly accept a compliment.
Tamahome, a man of the streets and out for money. When he met Miyaka, everything for him changed. Even if at first he would seem rough and rather uncaring, he showed to all that he was a very sweet man with intentions aimed at making those he cared about happy and settled.
Chichiri, a mysterious and enigmatic preist, whose powers were almost as curious as the man himself. He quickly befriended Miyaka, and others just as easily. His ever-smiling face and laid back personality hide what is really behind his smile, but that is for others to find out at a different time.
Chiriko, a sweet and innocent young man, studying hard for the exams that people all throughout the country were free to participate in. Just as much as he was sweet he was also astoundingly brilliant. He was the youngest of those guarding Miyaka.
Nuriko, he was the most flippant and mysterious of them all. Donning the clothes and airs of a woman one really could not tell whether he was she or she was he. Though slightly confusing he proved to be true to Miyaka, protecting her with everything he had and fiercely dedicated to her safety even while hiding it behind half-taunting jokes.
Tasuki was the redheaded and fanged leader of bandits in Konan’s mountain range. He was recruited into the journey quite by accident, or perhaps by fate. A dedicated ‘hater of women’ he almost served as the comic relief of the group and yet when things got rough his courage shone brighter than the flame from his enchanted fan.
Mitsukake was a large man, he was also a quiet man. As a doctor he was possessed of a gentleness that few hold. He proved to be an infallible help whenever any of the group were injured.
Together these seven with Miyaka moved through many trials and tribulations. The end of the book brought on a bout of anarchy for everyone involved with the mysterious book. And in the end, by summoning the beast god Suzaku, Miyaka was able to abate the crises started by the events of the ending of the tome.
Those events occurred many a century ago. ‘The Universe of the Four Gods’ has been long since destroyed, caught in the cold fingers of time and chance. It is gone, taking its curious spell and magic with it. However, the story did not end there.
There existed a sister book, a small and inauspicious volume written in neat ancient Chinese, and bound in leather the color of blood. It possesses a spell and story very similar to ‘The Universe of the Four Gods’. Some of the characters are the same, and others aren’t there at all. The sister story has not been read since it’s original transcription, and had been waiting for the right group of people to come along for a –long- time. The book’s spell would not work at all unless a group of individuals of the right size and with the right hearts were to be born at the same time. That time has come now.
Through careful manipulation of human events and people the book has come into the possession of a man known as Nanashi, otherwise called Trowa Barton. It sits in his study, a small and crowded nook he selected himself in one of the Winner family’s many mansions. He chose the small space himself for his eclectic mix of literature and art. ‘The Tale of the Four Emperors’ waits patiently for its spell to begin.
As this tale begins in earnest, a young Cheng Wufei steps quietly into that same study, with the sun filtering through the blinds like melted butter, flowing golden onto the crimson carpet underfoot. Reaching a tentative hand up to grasp the spine of the book he started the chain of events.
And that, dear readers, is where our story begins- - -
