1999 Zone 2 Expedition - Photos

The Site

A panoramic view of the site from the entrance (composite of three photos).  Visible in the distance at the left is the 20m tower.  Right of center, the 15m beam is being raised.  Left of center is the 15/10m car and camper; the 10m beam is barely visible over the trees.  The right photo shows the clearing used by the 40m team (the camper is hidden by the trees).  The 80m team set up in a clearing about 1/2 km down the road to the right.

Another view, looking from the 15 beam towards the 20m tower.  The 20m camper is also visible at the base of the distant tower.

The 80m operation

This is the clearing used by the 80m team.  The camper is on the right; the tent on the left covers the generator.

The two phased verticals used for 80m, as seen from the road approaching the 80m site.

The 40m operation

Exterior view of the 40m camper.  The antenna mast is visible in the background.

The 40m antenna, five switched dipoles supported from a 50 foot mast.  Visible in the background at the left are the outhouses provided at the campground (the only "facilities").

The 40m antenna on the ground, before it was raised.  You can see the mast and the five tuned feedlines.  When one dipole is active, the other four act as reflectors.

Operating position inside the 40m camper.

The 40m generator, located about 80 feet from the camper.  Normally the tarpaulin hangs over the generator to protect it from rain and snow.

Another view of the 40m antenna array, at sunset.  You can just see the five feedlines dropping from the centers of the five dipoles.

The 20m operation

The 20m operation.  The camper on the left held the operating position; the camper on the right was the sleeping quarters. The beam was used for contest contacts and the vertical antenna for miscellaneous operation.

The 15m and 10m operation

Exterior view of the 15 and 10 metre operations.  The camper was shared by both rigs (and was also used for sleeping quarters).  The 10m antenna is attached to the one of the picnic table shelters which are on the campground.  The generator is sitting on the ground at the front of the auto.  Slightly visible through the trees is the 40m camper.

The other side of the 15m/10m camper.

Another view of the 15m/10m site, showing the 10m beam in the background, and the 15m beam at the right (attached to another shelter).

Carl VE3BY, and Manfred VA3RMF (on the tower), working on the 15m beam.
